Background and content[edit]

"Sad Beautiful Tragic" is a song written and sung by Taylor Swift for her fourth studio album. Swift spoke of the song, saying that it was "reflecting on something that was lost"[1] It is a country song, with strong country folk influence. Swift and Chapman used the original demo because of the rawness the track had when they first recorded it. The song is led by acoustic guitar, and also has electric guitar, ukulele, bass, and keyboards in it. It is in the key of G major, and Swift's vocals span from E3 to D4.[2]

Critical reception[edit]

The song received generally positive reviews. Billboard Magazine compared it Swift's to 2010 song, "Last Kiss", praising the somber tone of the song.[3] Taste of Country praised the lyricism displayed in the song, saying that Swift sings with a "newfound sense of patience and maturity."[4]

Chart performance[edit]

Upon the release of Red, the song peaked at number 37 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and at number 92 on the Canadian Hot 100.
