[edit] History

The Salisbury Airport was once used as a Naval Training base during World War II in 1945. After the war ended, the Salisbury-metro area acquired the naval base and turned it into a commercial airport. In the beginning, Chesapeake Airways provided freight and passenger service to Baltimore. Henson Airways, owned by Richard A. Henson, soon came to the airport in 1968 with the idea of "frequency" flights that would provide many flights using smaller aircraft to many airports along the east coast. Henson Airways reigned as the primary air service provider in Salisbury until US Airways Express purchased Henson Airways in 1992. After the purchase of Henson Airways, Piedmont grew and opened an operating base in Salisbury. After opening the base, the airlines operated flights to Philadelphia and Washington. The service to Washington was later cancelled and service to Charlotte began.

[edit] Airport construction and expansion

Several construction projects were recently completed extending the main runway by 1000 ft and improving safety areas. These projects will allow flights using regional jets and slightly larger aircraft such as McDonnell Douglas MD-80s.[2]

[edit] Facilities

The Richard A. Henson Terminal is a 26,000 square foot building opened in 1990. There is an airlines ticketing and check in area, two departure gates, and one arrival gate.[2] The Airport's Cafe and Lounge services the passengers with refreshments and food. The terminal is surrounded by 6 acres of parking apron which services the arriving and departing aircraft. Avis, Hertz, and National all operate automobile rental services in the arrival terminal.

[edit] Airlines and destinations

As the only commercial airport on the Delmarva Peninsula, Wicomico Airport serves Delaware, the Eastern Shore of Maryland, and the Eastern Shore of Virginia; including Salisbury and Ocean City.

The airport is the operational headquarters for US Airways Express carrier Piedmont Airlines. Piedmont exclusively uses the Bombardier Dash 8-100/300 Series twin-engine turbo-prop airliner,[3] with maximum seating of up to 50 passengers. In 2011, Piedmont established a passenger record of 143,736 passengers.[4]

Allegiant Air began service to Orlando-Sanford International Airport in February of 2012, via its McDonnell Douglas MD-80 jets.[5] [6]The flights operate twice a week on Sunday and Thursday. Each flight will have 150 seats available. Allegiant is the first commercial airline to begin new services since Piedmont Airlines.

Orlando is the most popular final destination for the passengers that pass through Salisbury. Before Allegiant came, connecting flights had to be made at Philadelphia International Airport and Charlotte Douglas International Airport.[7]
