2008-present San Diego Gulls

The San Diego Gulls are a member of the Western States Hockey League based in Escondido, California. The team plays in the Western Division of the Western States Hockey League at the Iceoplex-Escondido.

Franchise history[edit]

The Franchise was founded in 2001 as the San Diego Surf. At the time the WSHL was a Tier III Jr. B league at the time.[1] It played as the Surf from 2001 until 2008. The team took the current name, San Diego Gulls starting in 2008, reflecting the history of the San Diego Gulls, the name of three former hockey franchises in San Diego.[2][3][4]

Prior to the 2011-12 season the WSHL and all its team members, including the Gulls, became AAU sanctioned. The first Junior A hockey league to make that transition.
