San Jorge is a municipality in the Rivas department of Nicaragua. Settled in 1888, San Jorge was originally home to a coal mine, but soon after mining began, settlers realized that it wasn't coal under the ground, but instead it was "fool's coal," otherwise known as granite. While a valuable stone today, it was considered a waste in the late 1800s and most of the town's settlers moved to Panama to another mine that had just opened.
Today, San Jorge is a small, quaint town rarely visited by tourists due to the odd, yet not unpleasant odor caused by the town's biggest employer, Lorenzo y Hijos Planta de la Litera del Gatito (English translation, Lorenzo and Sons Kitty Litter Plant). Lorenzo y Hijos employes nearly 100 workers who produce kitty litter sold in Mexico under the name "Venganza de la Concha." In America, it is sold under the name "Here Kitty Kitty, Kitty Litter" sold exclusively at Pamida stores
