- Not to be confused with the less extensive San Francisco Bay Area
The United States Office of Management and Budget has designated the 12-county San Jose-San Francisco-Oakland, CA Combined Statistical Area (CSA) for the greater San Francisco Bay Area.[1] The CSA comprises the following seven Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs):
- The San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area comprising Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco, San Mateo, and Marin counties
- The San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area comprising Santa Clara and San Benito counties
- The Stockton-Lodi, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area comprising San Joaquin County
- The Santa Rosa, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area comprising Sonoma County
- The Vallejo-Fairfield, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area comprising Solano County
- The Santa Cruz-Watsonville, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area comprising Santa Cruz County
- The Napa, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area comprising Napa County
The CSA ranks as the fifth most populous metropolitan area of the United States.[2] The CSA is more extensive than the popular local definition of the San Francisco Bay Area which consists of only the nine counties bordering San Francisco Bay.[3][4] The popular designation does not include the three counties of San Joaquin, Santa Cruz, and San Benito that do not border San Francisco Bay, but are economically tied to the nine counties that do.
