San Julián is a city and municipality of about 26,000 people in the Altos region of the Mexican state of Jalisco. San Julian is a town and people of the state of Jalisco, Mexico. Located northeast of Jalisco, in the Southern Highlands Region. Its land area is 268.44 km 2 and is located within the coordinates. According to Count II of Population and Housing, is mainly engaged in the tertiary and secondary. San Julian is known for having very beautiful women and many handsome men. Nearly the whole population is of the Roman Catholic Religion. This devoutness of the religion lead to the first armed uprising against the government which was called San Julian and regiment was commanded by General Miguel Hernández. This uprising was the very beginning of the cristero's war. A consequence of this was martyred Saint Julio Alvarez Mendoza who was tortured to death. The torture included acts such as walking on hot rocks after have the skin from the bottom of his foot cut off.
San Julian main tourist attraction is Balneario Palo alto 10 km. The traditional Sunday Night at the Plaza and Thursday Tianguis. The main Festivity is La Candelaria, celebrated each year February 2. During this fun and exciting time of La Candelaria also known as "Las Fiestas" one can go out to the Carnival, the Certamen, Dances, Rodeos, el Teatro del Pueblo (The Town's Theater Group), and some years, even at the Circus. The carnival which they have now located right outside of the southern part of the town last approximately two weeks. This includes multiple food stands, games with prizes, and the variety of entertaining rides. Of course one of the main reasons that the young population of San Julian goes to the carnival is to throw confetti at each other.
The Certamen is where the towns queen is announced. This tradition happens every year and has gotten bigger as time has gone on. Although it is on the expensive side to attend this event, it is definitely worth your money. Its a typical beauty pageant where the young ladies compete and are judged on a variety of areas. The young ladies wear traditional outfits, evening gowns, and a dresses designed by a local seamstress do display the talent of the town. Every year they also take a famous artist to perform at the event as entertainment.
Also each year, there are a few dances that can be expected during the Candelaria. The artist change each year and the people of San Julian anxiously await every year for the announcement of who will be coming to perform at the Rodeos that San Julian has. they also bring music groups or a band. After the horse shows and bull riding at the rodeo, the people stay and dance the night away.
El Teatro del Pueblo (The Town's Theater Group), is a way for all kinds of people to have fun every night. Here the stage is set up and has a different event going on everyday during the Candelaria. Some of the events that they have, are talented shows, musicians, and poetry readings. There are variety of prizes, and entertainment for many people.
San Julian is definitely a great place to be at all year round, but especially during the Candelaria, this is shown in the huge amount of people that go back to San Julian every year during the Candelaria to enjoy the local events.
