The Sanghamitra Express is a train which runs daily between Bangalore City Railway Station in Bangalore in Karnataka and Patna Junction in Patna in Bihar via Chennai Central. This train takes a total of 48 hours for covering the 2729 km distance. Numbered 12295 UP and 12296DN, this belongs to the superfast category. The train belongs to South Western Railway.

Sanghamitra was the daughter of Emperor Ashoka of the Mauryan Empire who ruled Pataliputra, the present Patna. Sanghamitra was sent to Sri Lanka to spread Buddhism and peace.

This train used to run from Chennai Central every Tuesday and Thursday at 1:30PM. Then in early 2001 this train was extended from Yeshvantapur Railway Station departing at 7:00AM on Tue and Thu.

Later by 2005 this train was made daily (Except Friday's) departing from Bangalore City railway Station up to Patna Junction. This train used to run daily between Bangalore City Junction to Patna Junction. However, as of 1 February 2014 the train would terminate at Danapur (10 KM before en-route Patna Junction). Further, the train's originating/terminating station would be made Patliputra station, yet another railway station in Patna in order to distribute loads of traffic from Patna Junction. Presently the Patliputra Station is undergoing its finishing touches and likely to be inaugurated soon.

Sanghamitra express is hauled by a WAP-4 or any other electric loco from Erode or Royapuram or Lallaguda. It is also hauled by WAP-7 sometimes. The top speed of this train is 110kmph.

This train leaves Bangalore City on all days at 9AM to reach Patna on all days at 9:20AM. Return this train leaves Patna on all days at 19:50 to reach Bangalore at 20:40 on all days .

This train goes through Jolarpettai, Arakkonam, Chennai Central, Gudur, Nellore, Vijayawada Junction, Nagpur, Itarsi, Jabalpur and Mughalsarai.

The loco reversal is done at Chennai Central.

Earlier, Allahabad also used to be on the route of Sanghamitra Express, but in the beginning of 2014, the train's route has been diverted through Cheowki yard. This step was taken by railway authorities in order to subside the overwhelming volume of traffic and passengers at Allahabad and also to curtail the run time between Patna and Bangalore by a couple of hours. Cheowki Station a new stoppage added to the list of this train from January 2014. The time of travel between Danapur and Bangalore, however, remains the same as it used to be according to the Railway Time Table existing previously.
