Sanjay Mishra (born 6 October 1963) is an Indian comedian and film actor who is best known for his character of Apple Singh, an "icon" used by ESPN Star Sports during the 1999 Cricket World Cup.[1][2] He made his film debut in the 1995 Indian musical film Oh Darling! Yeh Hai India!. Then he followed on by Rajkumar (1996) and Satya (1998).[3]

Early life and background[edit]

Sanjay was born in 1963 into a Hindu family in Patna, Bihar. On his Birth famous actor Biswajeet was there to gave him his blessings. His father was a journalist named Shambhu Nath Mishra. After his graduation, he joined National School of Drama after completing graduation, passing out in in 1989.[4] There he bonded strongly with Tigmanshu Dhulia, Nirmal Pandey, and Irrfan Khan. [5]


He did many commercials and small movie roles before he got the opportunity to stand with Amitabh Bachchan in a Mirinda commercial. On his first day of shoot for TV series Chanakya in 1991. He reportedly took 28 take.Director left him with an assistant director so that he can rehearse for the shoot. His first release was Oh Darling! Yeh Hai India! in 1995 in which he played a small part as a harmonium player.

He later acted in Satya and Dil Se which helped him in bagging the role of Shukla in Office Office .for next few years he acted mainly in serials before moving to films completely.He left Television Serials in 2005 after he got recognition for his role in Bunty Aur Babli and Apna Sapna Money Money. In 2006, he acted in two back to back hit films Golmaal: Fun Unlimited and Dhamaal and gained fame. Over the next few years he appeared in small roles in many multi-starer big banner films before getting nationwide popularity for his role as RGV in All the Best: Fun Begins and Phas Gaye Re Obama. His dialogue "Dhondu Just Chill" gained immense popularity.His latest release Ankhon Dekhi proved him as a serious actor. His forthcoming releases are Bhoothnath Returns, Kick and Dum Laga Ke haisha.

Though Mishra had serious roles in films like Zameen, Charas,Plana and Satya yet he is known for his comic acts.

Phas Gaye Re Obama was a serious comedy based on the recession. He is currently directing a movie named Pranaam Walekum, to be released in January 2012, as well as Dhama Choukdhi, which also stars Dipraj Rana and model Rozlyn Khan. Besides working in Hindi film industry, he has also acted in Bhojpuri cinema. His only Bhojpuri release till date is Rang Li Chunariya Tere Naam.

In 2014, he played principal lead in the film Ankhon Dekhi directed by Rajat Kapoor.[4]
