The Sarasota Reds were a minor league baseball team based in Sarasota, Florida. Home games were played at Ed Smith Stadium which also served as the Cincinnati Reds spring training facility. The team played their final game on September 6, 2009, winning 4-0 against the Charlotte Stone Crabs. The Reds organization will move spring training to Arizona in 2010, leaving Sarasota without a FSL team.

The team, which played in the Florida State League, was the High-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds major-league club from 2005-2009. On October 29th it was announced that the Reds were sold to the Pittsburgh Pirates and would be moving to Bradenton, FL playing as the Bradenton Pirates.

[edit] Previous franchise history

Before 2005, the team was known as the Sarasota Red Sox and affiliated with the Boston Red Sox, and had Kevin Youkilis play for them in 2002. Before that (1997 to at least 1987) they were affiliated with the Chicago White Sox, and were thus known as the Sarasota White Sox. For several years they played in Sarasota's Payne Park up until the construction of Ed Smith stadium.
