Sathya is a critically acclaimed 1988 Tamil language film starring Kamal Haasan in the lead role of the protagonist, with the female lead played by Amala. This is the first directional venture for director Suresh Krishna, who was previously associate director for K.Balachander in films such as Punnagai Mannan and Sindhu Bhairavi. Sathya is basically the story of one man who wants to make a difference and ends up becoming a henchman to a political leader who has his own agenda. The movie is an effective commentary on the sorry state of such unemployed youngsters and the resulting unwilling choices they have to make to earn money. It clearly shows us how the youth, in their time of need, become willing toys in the hands of the people with the money to hire them.

[edit] Plot
Sathyamurthy(Kamalhassan) is an educated but unemployed youngster, dividing his time between hanging around with his friends and being verbally abused by his stepmother. Since he is jobless and often verbally abused by his stepmother, he along with his friends started dealing with the problems around them. a subsequent clash with a local rowdy brings Sathya to the attention of Dhandapani(Kitty), a rich philanthropist. So Sathya becomes his right-hand man, carrying out his orders while Dhandapani uses Sathya as his weapon in the political war he is carrying on with Mariappan(Rajesh), the local MLA.
Kitty has given a nuanced performance. the plot deals with how unemployed youths, like sathya, are used by politicians for their advantage and are later thrown into dust bin.
the script is rivetting, with the lead actors giving well-calibrated nuanced performances. Dhandapani is a cunning politician who uses sathya to get a "file" from mariyappa's den. the file contains the secrets of mariappa.
