[edit] Gameplay
Scarface: The World Is Yours begins in the last scene of the film, where Tony Montana is being attacked by Sosa's assassins. The player takes control of Tony, who then kills all the assassins, including the one who kills Tony in the film. His last surviving men inform him that the police and the DEA have arrived and raided the mansion, causing Tony to escape through an underground passage. He arrives in an undisclosed location, and begins making his recovery from the assassins' attack.
While recovering, he reminisces about the mistakes that he made while admitting he has a cocaine addiction. From that moment on, Tony goes cold turkey and vows to get revenge on Sosa. With his drug empire in shambles and his assets seized by the authorities, he must start from the bottom once again and rebuild his empire to get his vengeance. The game then starts on Tony's new path to glory - kill many of Tony's competitors, and finally raid the mansion of Sosa and kill him. The player makes contacts, friends, and sets up accounts with banks to launder his or her money, though this in itself takes a percentage of it depending on how far the player is in the game and how good his negotiation skills are.
Early on Montana buys his mansion back from the authorities and the game allows a great deal of customization. The player buys and deals his own cocaine using a mini game with which the player trys to get more cocaine for less money, and sell a gram of cocaine for more money. The banks are used to save and launder money, while also acting as save points.
[edit] Plot
The game takes place during an alternate ending of Scarface, on the premise that Tony Montana was able to avoid being killed. Forced to fight his way out, he kills Alejandro Sosa's assassins and escapes. Sosa is contacted by his surviving assassins (as Tony and the police, who arrived at the Mansion as soon as Tony got out of his secret passageway and killed many of them) on how Tony's Drug Empire is no more and how it is now split into pieces. Tony then swears off cocaine and makes a vow to make up for his mistakes and kill Sosa.
Three Months Later, Tony decides to contact one of his former lawyers, George Sheffield, to get information on what's been going on during his three month hiding. The Vice confronts Tony after meeting Sheffield and tells him to bring them $10,000 to get his mansion back (albeit in a ruined state). After a reunion with one of his dealers Felix, Tony begins rebuilding his drug empire. The first task is to make a new bank account which will be monitored closely by The Vice if he steps out of line with the cops as well as stealing a satellite phone from Gaspar Gomez's personal guard to make calls back to his thugs to deliver his car or to call his henchmen to do favors for him (once the henchmen are purchased) or just to make delivery calls.
To reclaim Miami as his, Tony starts taking back Little Havana, which is controlled by The Diaz Brothers, Edgar and Alfonso, as his first step and runs a few errands in exchange for rights to buy fronts for his drug distribution. After reclaiming all but the Havana Storehouse, he decides to have a drink at the Babylon Club where he is attacked by Diaz Assassins again. The Diaz Brothers have also sent a hitman to kill his mother. In a blind rage, he dismembers Edgar with a chainsaw and murders Alfonso in a car chase. Then Tony and his men raids and takes over their drug storehouse and their cocaine shipment.
Tony is now able to get back his prestige, even buying Manny and Gina's cremated remains to remind him of his past mistakes as well as renovating his mansion. At this point, Sheffield sends a delegation as he flees to Bolivia having betrayed Tony, and tries to get him killed in Freedom Town using the possibility of finding Elvira. He is able to survive the assassination attempt and starts retaking Downtown, currently Nacho Contreras' gang territory. After purchasing businesses including the Babylon Club, Tony and his men attack Nacho's drug storehouse at the Miami Marina and takes it over, turning mainland Miami into his own piece of land, he now needs a loyal distributor to provide him with larger keys of cocaine. He receives a deal with The Sandman who also wants Sosa to die as well. Apon arrival in The Islands, The Sandman tells Tony that with Tony's storehouses and his drug supply, the two could rule Miami (This could obviously be an alliance proposal), Tony agrees to the alliance, and decides to get a drink, so The Sandman directs him to the Venus Bar, owned by his ex-girlfriend Venus. Venus gives Tony a lead to Nacho's Casino Tanker. Tony then kills Nacho and then later, with the help of a man only known as The Dock Boss, claims his other tanker, which is used for drug smuggling at sea. After taking over the drug smuggling tanker, Tony meets many immigrants (One is a woman named Maribel) who wanted to head to America and their leader.
After taking North Beach and South Beach from Gaspar Gomez, The Sandman is attacked at his Drug Plantation by the Ortega Cartel, a ruthless Colombian Drug Cartel, and Tony helps mount a counterattack to drive them out. After the battle is over, The Sandman informs Tony that his other Drug Plantation on an island named Tranquilandia, was shut down by the Ortegas and are keeping several Plantation workers there as hostages. Tony then travels to Tranquilandia and kills many Ortega members, frees any surviving hostages and takes 10 drug packages from the Drug Plantation camps. Tony receives a stable shipment of cocaine when he returns to The Sandman's main Drug Plantation in exchange for his effort, also, The Sandman gives Tony his Drug Plantation so he can be able to harvest 30 keys of coke to his storehouses for $500,000 whenever he wants (By going in the green marker). With his Drug Empire in firm control once again, he decides to hunt down Sosa in Bolivia.
The final battle in at Sosa's Mansion in Bolivia is an all or nothing assault as he kills his way through the Mansion, brutally killing George Sheffield and Gaspar Gomez including Sosa's guards. With only Sosa in his way, Tony ruthlessly kills him and returns to Miami. On the way out of Sosa's Mansion though, a lone surviving thug begs for mercy, and Tony decides to hire him as a butler instead and later nicknames him "Manny". In the end, Tony relaxes in his mansion with Venus, and the femmes fatales he may have acquired throughout the game. He bids "Goodnight to the Bad Guy", as he has finally gotten his revenge and rebuilt his Drug Empire.
[edit] Characters
Tony Montana - The main character of the game and film. In the original film, Montana died after Sosa's gang raided his mansion and killed him, but in the game he survives and regains his money, power, reputation and his old empire before finally getting his revenge on Sosa.
Alejandro Sosa - The game's antagonist. In the film, he was portrayed by Paul Shenar. Sosa is a ruthless Bolivian drug lord who earned the wrath of Montana by ordering an assassination team to kill him in his mansion. Sosa appears as the game's final boss, and is killed by Tony.
The Diaz Brothers - Edgar and Alfonso Diaz are in charge of a large drug distribution cartel in Little Havana. Edgar is brutally slaughtered by a vengeful Tony after killing his mother, and Alfonso dies later, pursued by Tony.
Nacho Contreras - A drug baron in charge of drug distribution cartel in Downtown. He is killed when a shark eats him after Tony has shot him with a sniper rifle. Nacho is voiced by Miguel Sandoval.
Gaspar Gomez - A drug baron who controls North and South Beach's cocaine distribution. He also teams up with Sosa against Tony Montana and often calls Tony on the SAT Phone he had stolen from a truck containing $50,000 to pressure him into returning the SAT Phone (The truck was parked in the underground car park of the La Normande Hotel that Gaspar's Penthouse was situated at). Gaspar was seen in the film after Tony confronted Gina in the bathroom. Gaspar, played by Robert Vandenberg was seen standing outside the door, spurring Tony to ask Gaspar and his bodyguard, along with many others "What the fuck you want, you want something?!", pushing them away. In the game he is voiced by Cheech Marin.
The Sandman – An Afro-Latin American drug dealer working in The Islands. In some missions throughout the video game, Montana will have to protect this character. The Sandman is voiced by Steven Bauer, who played Manny Ribera in the Scarface movie.
George Sheffield – A lawyer who used to work for Tony Montana. During the middle of the game, Sheffield betrays Tony Montana. At the end of the game, Tony Montana is challenged to kill Sheffield once and for all. He is voiced by actor James Woods.
Felix - A Dealer that works for Tony Montana throughout the game, you can access missions from him with the SAT Phone. He is only seen in the beginning missions.
[edit] Development
The game was originally developed exclusively for the PlayStation 2, but ended up being ported for the Xbox, PC, and later the Wii. Cast members of the original movie lent their voices to the game, including Robert Loggia, Steven Bauer, and Al Israel. Due to Al Pacino's voice change, he chose the voice actor to voice Tony Montana.
The game was also in development for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 upon their release and console announcements, but due to budget reasons and development trouble partially with porting the original engine to the higher end consoles, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 counterparts were ultimately cancelled.
The commercial for the game featured the Mötley Crüe song "Kickstart My Heart", although the song was not in the game. However, the band's drummer, Tommy Lee, played the role of the manager of Fidel's Records and Tapes.
[edit] Reception
The game has received generally favorable reviews. IGN gave it a review of 8.7/10, making it an Editor's Choice game, and Game Informer awarded it 85%. However, a number of reviews have been less favorable, with GameSpot only giving it 6.4 out of 10 and the G4 TV show X-Play giving it a 3 out of 5, and OXM giving it only 4.5/10. The PS2 reviews have been very similar to those of the Xbox, with the 80-90% range dominating but several notable sources voicing dissent. The PC version had been released with several bugs, especially in controls and map loading systems, thus giving the game mixed reviews, but with a similarly respectable average score of around 72-75% in Metacritic and GameRankings. Gamespot gave the Wii version 5.8 for what they thought was a poor control method, while IGN gave it an 8.5, praising the new controls and saying that it was the best version of the game available, scored slightly lower only due to its late release and nature as a last-gen port. Hyper's Cam Shea commends the game for starring Amos "cutscenes, dialogue and authentic soundtrack" but criticises it for "terrible headshot bloodspray [and] too many filler missions".[1]
According to Game Informer and Vivendi Universal, Scarface: The World Is Yours sold over a million copies in North America, Europe, and Australia. The game has sold over 2.5 million copies since launch.[2]
