Schiller is an electronic ambient music band from Germany led by Christopher von Deylen, a German musician, composer and producer. The band is named after poet and dramatist Friedrich Schiller. Schiller won the ECHO award in 2002 for the Best Dance Single of the Year.[1]. Schiller has sold over 7 million albums worldwide.[2]
Schiller's vocals are sung by guest artists including Sarah Brightman, Moya Brennan of Clannad, Ben Becker, Peter Heppner of synth pop band Wolfsheim, miLù, also known as Mila Mar, Xavier Naidoo, Maya Saban, Kim Sanders formerly of Culture Beat, Ana Torrojaof the Spanish pop group Mecano, Tarja Turunen formerly of power metal group Nightwish, Despina Vandi, Alexander Veljanov of Darkwave group Deine Lakaien, Swedish singer September/. Other musicians that have collaborated with Schiller include Klaus Schulze, Mike Oldfield, Helen Boulding, Damae of Fragma, Jaël of Swiss band Lunik, Stephenie Coker and German actress Anna Maria Mühe.
Many of Schiller's albums take over a year to receive a North American release. Tracks are re-recorded with English replacing German lyrics. The television channel Music Force Europe dedicates a weekly programming slot to Schiller's music; the show is called "Schill-out"
After the North American release of Life, Christopher Von Deylen stated that he did not wish to continue mixing English translations of the German language tracks.[citation needed]

[edit] Career
[edit] Background
Schiller was founded by Christopher von Deylen and Mirko von Schlieffen in Hamburg in 1998. Their first single Glockenspiel was released in the same year. Their first album, Zeitgeist (Spirit of the age) appeared in 1999 - marking a change from a dance-oriented sound to a more ambient and downtempo style. The album was also released in Asia, with some track changes. Schiller's second studio album Weltreise (Voyage) was inspired by a two-month-long road trip that Deylen took with his father from London to Peking. The album yielded three singles A beautiful day,Dream of you and Dancing with loneliness. For the American and French editions of the album the lyrics were translated into English and the album renamed The World Trip. Schiller's first live performance was a one-off concert in 2001, some years before their first concert tour.
Mirko Von Schlieffen left Schiller due to creative differences with von Deylen.
[edit] Post Split
After the split a third studio album was released called Leben, with German version being released first. Many singles were released including songs sung by Maya Saban ("I've seen it all", "I miss you"), Sarah Brightman ("Smile"), Mila Mar ("Liebe") and Peter Heppner ("I feel you"). Videos were made of the last two of these. The American version of the song "Liebe" was released as "Love" with English lyrics.
Schiller's fourth studio album is entitled Tag Und Nacht (Day And Night). It was released in Germany through Universal Music in mid-fall 2005, with two editions:
- A standard release, featuring the emergence of a new singer, Jette von Roth, who has been the voice of German Electro-Pop act KayCee by the now famous DJs and producers Oliver Huntemann and Stephan Bodzin on their 2003-album "Beg 4 More" (Universal). She will record two additional tracks, with one of those performed on the "Day and Night" tour, and clips were also made. Thomas Dürr, a vocalist from "Die Fantastischen Vier" performs in the first single.
- A two disc deluxe edition with two new songs, a remix of "Die Nacht...", and a chill-out sample compilation of the album.
The North American release of Day And Night came on 10 July 2007. A DVD by the same name containing footage of a live concert was released simultaneously.
Schiller's fifth album, Sehnsucht (Desire) was announced in December 2007 and later released on 22 February 2008. Sehnsucht was simultaneously released in two formats and in three editions which are as follows:
- A limited super deluxe edition 3-disc release with two CDs and a DVD. Over 30 new songs will be on the album, with vocalists including Kim Sanders and Jette von Roth who have collaborated with Schiller in the past, as well as some new voices, Klaus Schulze, Ana Torroja, Despina Vandi, Ben Becker, Xavier Naidoo, among others.
The DVD contains footage from the Schiller concert in Kiev, as well as music video clips and 15-minute segment with von Deylen himself. Also included is a 36-page book containing photos, discussions, detailed information about particular songs, and other ephemera.
- A limited edition which contains only one audio disc and a DVD. The audio disc comprises a selection of tracks from the first and second discs of the super deluxed edition. The DVD is identical to the one in the super deluxe edition.
Sehnsucht, a track from the new album, is the first video, and the first single from the album.
Over 100,000 copies of Sehnsucht have been sold since the release of the album, It has received a golden certification.[3]
"Sehnsucht" was internationally released under the name "Desire" on 26 May 2008.[4]
Schiller also collaborated with Colbie Caillat on "You" which was released in 2008, both of them appear in the accompanying video. Same year Schiller produced another successful single called 'Time For Dreams' with world famous Chinese pianist Lang Lang. The song was used by the German TV channel ZDF during the 2008 Olympic games in Beijing.
Maserati used one of Schiller's song "Drifting and Dreaming" for their promotional video of the Maserati Granturismo.[citation needed][5]
The English edition of the album Atemlos (German for Breathless) reached until number 3 in the chart of IFPI in Greece.[6]
