Smilebit was a research and development division within Sega.

In 2000, Sega split it's internal research and development studios into semi-autonomous subsidaries.

In July 1 of 2004 all of Sega's 2nd party studios, AM2, Sonic Team, WOW Entertainment, Overworks, Hitmaker, Amusement Vision, United Game Artists, and Smilebit were integrated into Sega again.
