[edit] Plot
The episode begins with ailing Chief Justice Roy Ashland collapsing in his chambers, causing Toby and the other senior staffers to prompt the President to begin considering replacing Ashland on the Supreme Court.
Matthew Perry returns as deputy counsel Joe Quincy, a former clerk to the Chief Justice of the United States, who's tapped by Toby to try to persuade the aging jurist to retire following the collapse. In one heartwarming scene at Ashland's hospital bed, he acknowledges their long relationship and encourages Quincy that given their circumstances it's now appropriate to call each other by their first names. Joe replies softly with a trace of a smile, "Yes, Mr. Chief Justice." Ashland returns the smile.
Meanwhile, Josh is on the sidelines as budget negotiations with Congressional Republican leaders reach a critical stage; and C.J.'s worried about Zoey's impending TV interview.
