María was previously a member of the Spanish Military and also served as a lawyer for his church.

Between 2005 and 2011, he served as secretary of state under Palmarian Pope Manuel Corral (Peter II). After Corral's death, María was elected on 16 July 2011 his successor in El Palmar de Troya and adopted the papal name Gregory XVIII.
