Shahjahanpur district (Hindi: शाहजहाँपुर जिला) is one of the historical districts of Uttar Pradesh in the republic of India. It is a part of Bareilly division which is situated in South East of Rohilkhand Division. It was established in 1813 by the British Government. Previously it was a part of district Bareilly. Geographically the main town is Shahjahanpur city which is its headquarter. Its Tehsils are: Powayan, Tilhar, Jalalabad, and Sadar.

Its district headquarter Shahjahanpur town is also known as Shaheedon Ki Nagri[1] (en. town of martyrs) or Shaheed Gadh[2] (en. Fort of Martyrs). On 9 August 1925, Pandit Ram Prasad Bismil, Ashfaqullah Khan, Chandrasekhar Azad, and Rajendra Lahiri robbed the British Treasury near Kakori railway station. On 26 December 1925, forty persons were arrested in this Kakori conspiracy case from all over India. Pandit Ram Prasad Bismil, Banarsi Lal, Lala Har Govind, Prem Krishna Khanna, Indu Bhushan Mitra, Thakur Roshan Singh, Ram Dutt Shukla, Madan Lal & Ram Ratna Shukla[3] among them were from Shahjahanpur. Murari Lal Gupta a resident of Mudia Panwar village had also actively participated in the train robbery with a fake name of Murari Sharma. He went underground and could not be traced out by the police till the end of the case. His son Damodar Swarup Gupta became a famous revolutionary poet with the pen name of "Vidrohi".

Located in the south-east of Bareilly Division, Shahjahanpur is an agriculture-based district of Uttar Pradesh. As per government notification it was established in the year 1813. Before its creation it was a part of Bareilly district. Geographically, it is situated at 27.35 N latitude and 79.37 E longitude. Adjoining districts of Shahjahanpur are Lakhimpur Kheri, Hardoi, Farrukhabad, Bareilly, Badaun, and Pilibhit. Its geographical area is 4575 metres 2.
The Ramganga, the Garrah and the Gomti are the main rivers of the district. The Kathana, the Jhukma the Mensi Rivers flow into the Gomti. The Khannaut, the Suketa and the Kai Rivers feed the Garrah. Major crops of the district are wheat, gram, millet, and potatoes.
There exists an army cantonment, and a major clothing factory for defence forces called Ordnance Clothing Factory. Shahjahanpur Club is a famous club of the district, whose membership was once regarded as very exclusive.

According to the 2011 census Shahjahanpur district has a population of 3,002,376,[4] roughly equal to the nation of Albania[5] or the US state ofMississippi[6]. This gives it a ranking of 123rd in India (out of a total of 640)[4]. The district has a population density of 673 inhabitants per square kilometre (1,740 /sq mi)[4]. Its population growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 17.84%[4]. Shahjahanpur has a sex ratio of 865females for every 1000 males[4] and a literacy rate of 61.61%[4].

Shahjahanpur is also known for its Kalin Udyog (en.carpet industry) as well as for Sarrafa Bazar (en.jewellery market). Shahjahanpur is the birth place of the pioneer Hindi playwright Bhuvneshwar and Hindi novelist Hridayesh. Revolutionary Hindi poet Damoder Swarup 'Vidrohi' and Poet laureate Madan Lal Verma 'Krant'[7] were also born in this district.
