Shark Tank is a reality television series based on the Sony TV/BBC TV Dragons' Den. It premiered on ABC television in August 2009 and features a panel of five investors called "sharks", who evaluate and act on investment proposals from entrepreneurs. The series is produced by Mark Burnett in conjunction with Dragons' Den format-holder Sony and has been compared to the ABC series American Inventor.[1]

[edit] History

Four episodes began airing in January 2010, and in August the show was renewed for an eight-episode season. Comic Jeff Foxworthy [2] and entrepreneur Mark Cuban joined the panel for three episodes each.[3]

The second season began on March 20, 2011 and aired on Fridays for nine weeks. Shark Tank's third season premiered Friday, January 20, 2012.[4][5]

On Monday, February, 27th, 2012, ABC ordered two additional episodes for Season 3 using unaired footage, bringing Season 3's episode order to 15. [6] Villy Custom is said to be on one of the last new episodes of season 3.

[edit] The panel

The panel consists of several investors called "sharks". Each panel member has the option of negotiating and investing with an entrepreneur who has presented a product, service or business concept. Panel members may offer investment capital, support and expertise, or they may make an offer to buy the company, or the product license or patent. Two of the panel members, Robert Herjavec and Kevin O'Leary, originally appeared on the Canadian version of the show, Dragons' Den.
