Sharon Newman (née Collins; formerly Abbott) is a fictional character on the American CBS soap opera The Young and the Restless, portrayed by Sharon Case. Introduced by creator the late William J. Bell as the love interest for Nicholas Newman (Joshua Morrow), the character made her onscreen debut on the episode that aired March 28, 1994. Initially portrayed by Monica Potter, both her and Heidi Mark had short stints on the show before Case took over, and continues to play Sharon today. Sharon's original storyline outline was written by William J. Bell, who stepped down as the head-writer in 1998. Case experienced brief intense contract negotiations and her fate on the show remained in question, at the time. The pairing of Sharon and Nick are popular with viewers, having developed into a Soap Opera Supercouple. They were married in 1996, and suffered several tumultuous events including infidelity on both of their parts, a stillborn child and the death of their own child, Cassie Newman (Camryn Grimes), who died in a tragic car accident in 2005. After the death of their child, Nick closed up on Sharon and had an affair with another woman, then left her. The storyline was praised by critics however ended up striking a nerve with fans of the couple. Despite the break-up, they have remained close. A Love triangle developed between Nick, Sharon and his mistress, Phyllis Summers Newman (Michelle Stafford) was praised, and it was deemed the best love triangle by Soap Opera Digest, who praised the levels of infidelity (and backlash) explored. They shared three children together, Cassie (who was born as a result of Sharon's ex high school boyfriend from Madison, however was later adopted by Nick legally as his own), Noah, and Faith Newman.
Sharon's emotionally angsty storylines generally focus on her children and her romantic relationships, as well as marriages to Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman) and the manipulative Adam Newman (Michael Muhney); her controversial ongoing relationship with Adam has been question in the Soap and the real world, as Adam had stole her daughter (Faith) at birth and given her to Ashley Abbott (Eileen Davidson), and led Sharon to believe her daughter had died. Their relationship is described as "dark" and has changed the dynamic of the character. Critics and fans alike have turned on their judgement of Sharon, labeling her as unstable and needy for her clinging to Adam. Audiences have also criticized current head-writer Maria Arena Bell for not reuniting Sharon with her original love interest, Nick who has been declared the love of her life, and for Sharon's odd behavior in recent years. Recently, Sharon was assumed dead following an escape from prison where she had been sentenced after being falsely accused for the murder of Skye Newman (Laura Stone), however has returned and her name has been cleared. Despite crimes and faults, the character is described as a central heroine on The Young and the Restless, who has endured many challenges to get to where she is today. For her portrayal of Sharon (critically acclaimed during her early years) Case has won various awards, most notably a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress In 1999, among 5 other Emmy nominations, and has garnered 2 Soap Opera Digest Award wins in addition.

[edit] Casting
Sharon Collins' original character outline was written by William J. Bell. Monica Potter portrayed Sharon for under two months.[1] Following Potter's exit, Heidi Mark was hired to take over the part.[2] Mark's reign on the character did not last, and the character was once again recast, this time with actress Sharon Case, who premiered as Sharon in August 1994.[3] Case had previously worked on several other soaps, such as General Hospital and As The World Turns.[4] Upon being cast into the role, Case became the third actress to hold the role of Sharon Collins in two months.[5] In 2003, Case briefly vacated the role of Sharon, due to contract negotiations. Case was off-screen from February 17 to May 1, 2003.[6] On April 3, 2003 it was announced by Times Daily that Case has managed to reach a deal with the soap to continue her portrayal of Sharon.[7] During her absence, the show chose to have the character run away from Genoa City rather than kill her off or recast the actress.
[edit] Development
[edit] Characterization
Sharon's character is described as "grown from a young girl from the poor side of town to a mature wife and mother and successful businesswoman" since her inception in 1994.[8] In 1995, Sharon Case, on her character said to Soap Opera Weekly that the early Sharon resembled to the early version of Jill Foster Abbott.
"Well I guess she has been a little busy this year. I don't mind all the ups and downs, because I get to work and I love acting. Sharon goes through many emotions in a week. On Monday she may be in a romantic mood and setting up some wonderful dinner for Nick. On Wednesday, she could be comforting a friend who is going through a tough time, and then by Friday one of her children may be sick and she fears it's the end of the world. But it's all fun. And when she's busy, so am I, so it's all good"
Case has also voiced her pleasure in bringing the storyline to life. Case, on her character has further stated has stated that "It’s stress that causes her to do weird things and panic. These are really extreme circumstances, where people can blank out or do things unlike themselves, or freak out. They even could go blind, temporarily."[10]
Sharon's mistakes eat her up alive and that she doesn't do well in secrets.[9] Sharon was described as being "insecure" and "feeling she was never good enough to have a happy relationship with a man" in the beginning, having come far despite slip-ups along the way.[9]
Case wears her own line of Jewelry, "Pomp" in the character.[11][12] During an interview with TV Guide Canada, she talked about her character's job, and also stated that she thinks it would be "Great" if Sharon was a fashion designer –– "I have a lot of great story on Y&R so it’s not like I’m unhappy or think I need more story but if Y&R wanted to go in that direction with her, in terms of her career, I think it would make sense. But you have to be careful that you don’t put your character in a job that lands them on an island away from the other characters. Sharon used to be the spokesperson for Beauty Of Nature, so something along those lines would make sense."[12]
[edit] Relationship with Nick and love triangle
The character has an on and off romance with Nicholas Newman (Joshua Morrow), who is considered the Love of her life, since she arrived in Genoa City. The pairing are widely considered a supercouple in the soap world.[13][14] They met in her first episodes apart of the serial, and she was introduced as a short-term love interest for him. However, much like the character of Victor (his father) Sharon has gone from a recurring short term character to a full time central character of the series, and is a permanent Love interest for the part of Nick. They were married illegally in 1995, and properly from February 1996 to 2006. They have been romantically linked since, in 2007 they shared a kiss, and from late 2008 to early 2009 they had an affair of their own. In 2010, they briefly reunited.
The pairing of Nick and Sharon, has been a strong, gaining many fans since their initial introduction. They are popularly referred to by the portmanteau Shick for Sharon and Nick on Internet message boards and Soap Opera magazines. During their early days as a couple madly in love, the pair often fantasized about running off and eloping; however Sharon refused (while Nick was the person craving closure away from his family) due to the high status of Nick's family.[15] They faced issues like Matt Clark exposing Sharon's past[16] (as she had given birth previously by her high-school lover, Frank Berrit) to Nick, who looked at her as his virginal girlfriend; at first Nick refused to believe this about Sharon's past, but it turned out true.[17] Furthermore into their marriage, they experienced problems with Grace Turner (portrayed by Jennifer Gareis during this storyline), Sharon's best friend who openly fell in love with Nick.[18] Despite Nick assuring Grace that he only had a professional relationship with her,[18] he eventually sleeps with Grace.[19] Grace and Nick both regret what they had done, and Sharon believes she is a fool as Nick's sister Victoria had warned her about Grace.[18][19] In March 2002, Sharon herself had an affair with Diego Guittierez (Diego Serrano, later played by Greg Vaughan), leaving her guilt-ridden.[20] Despite previous events, it was not until 2006 when Sharon and Nick's marriage fell to pieces, as a result of Nick's affair with Phyllis Summers (Michelle Stafford). He tossed between the two women, while ultimately deciding to be with Phyllis, as she was pregnant with his child. This was deemed the "Best Love Triangle" by Soap Opera Digest.[21] Sharon's continued affair and connection to Nick during his four-year marriage to Phyllis has sparked a six-year rivalry between the women (which begun in 2005 when she [Phyllis] cheated with Nick after the death of Cassie).
Following Nick's return with amnesia after being presumed dead in 2007 after a plane crash, he kissed Sharon while Phyllis was sentenced to Jail for Blackmailing Sharon and Brad Carlton (Don Diamont). Phyllis learned of the kiss and assumed that Nick would return to Sharon and their family, however Nick regained memory and returned to Phyllis and their infant daughter, Summer.[22] The kiss between Nick and Sharon was later exploited to the rest of Genoa City through tabloids; it ended up actually strengthening Sharon's marriage to Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman), who believed he had neglected Sharon, leading to her finding solace back in the arms of Nick.[23]
"Young love hasn't turned out to be enduring love for Nick and Sharon, whose multiple affairs and tragic loss of daughter Cassie in a car accident led to the end of their marriage. Nick is now married to Phyllis (who he began an affair with after Cassie's death), but he can't keep his nose out of Sharon's business, much to Phyllis' chagrin, and a Nick/Sharon reunion is always a possibility"
"Happly Ever After", 2010[13]
Due to Phyllis' resentment of Sharon, in October 2008, she wrote an article for their magazine, Restless Style's Editor's Letter.[24] In the article, she described Sharon as "needy" and described her as "a gum-chewing twit twirling her hair."[24] Nick's reaction was rage for Phyllis, angry at her for berating the mother of his children.[24] "He Freaks. She wrote this scathing thing. But Nick says it's not appropriate for her to go after the mother of his son like that," Michelle Stafford said in an interview.[24] Despite Nick's reliance on the fact of his lashing out is about being uncomfortable about "The mother of his children" being written in a negative light by his current wife, deep down it was evident to audiences he was still in love with Sharon.[24]
In 2009, Sharon experienced one of her biggest storylines so far. During the plot line in which Nick and Sharon would reunite and she would have his baby, Case stated "Sharon wants Nick more than anyone, but only under certain terms. Only if he's done with [..current wife..] Phyllis and in love with Sharon. Then, Sharon wants to be with him",[25] she also said in the same interview with The Daily News entertainment when asked about the question of Nick switching from Phyllis to Sharon repeatedly "That throws everything into a spin again. Sharon is, like, 'Now, what?' She has to make the decision all over again because she has new information."[25] In an interview with TV Guide Canada in 2009 in response to the character's unstable ways and craziness, Case stated of how she would react "It all makes sense and I welcomed the challenge. No matter how [head writer] Maria Arena Bell writes the storyline, it’s all up to me to decide how functional Sharon appears to people. I get into a lot of debates with our directors on how to play the story."[26] In another interview, Michael Fairman said "Sharon is acting so bizarre!"[10] In addition, the days January 26–30, ratings for The Young and the Restless increased, and the show gained an average of 400,000 viewers, in the eve (and after promotion) of the Nick and Sharon reunion, which was heavily awaited by fans, and this boosted up the Nielson Ratings for the show (Don Diamont's exit as Brad Carlton was equally credited for this however).[27]
In 2011, when asked by Michael Fairman if "OK in closing…. the big question: Are “Shick” (Sharon and Nick) finally over?" Case said "I don’t think “Phick” or “Shick” are over, and “Phick” are still happening now. I don’t think “Shick” will ever be over. “Shick” is not on right now, because we have “Shadam”".[28] The relationship has deteriorated however critics and fans alike assume it will not come to a conclusion. In recent events Nick has consistently questioned Sharon's better judgement over her relationship with the scheming Adam, and has a fixation in his mind that Sharon is always on the path to self destruction.[29] He also constantly accuses her of putting her relationship with her other love, Adam, before her children Noah and Faith.[30] In 2011, Nick began a relationship with Sharon's lawyer Avery Bailey Clark (Jessica Collins), who helps her (despite not being the final contributing factor) be set free from jail however refuses to represent Sharon against Nick during a custody battle for Faith Newman due to her romantic entanglement with Nick.[31] He has told Avery he is no longer romantically connected to Sharon or even Phyllis for that matter,[32] despite this he breaks it off with Avery and returns to Phyllis, while he is furious about Victor proposing to Sharon, the mother of his children. In a list of Greatest Soap Opera Supercouples by Kim Potts, Nick and Sharon were placed 16th.[13] A Love scene depicting the Sharon and Nick reunion from February 2009 has garnered over a million YouTube views.[33]
[edit] The Newman Family
Since the beginning, Sharon's storyline has always been intertwined with Nick's family, the Newman Family. She was opened into the family with open arms by its patriarch, Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) while pushed away by its matriarch, Nikki Newman (Melody Thomas Scott). She has also had a bitter friendship/relationship with Nick's sister, Victoria Newman (Heather Tom, now Amelia Heinle). She has had a great bond with Nick's father, Victor from the start, and views him as a father figure despite sharing a kiss with him once,[34][35] which sparked marriage problems with her and Nick which allowed her to leave town (while Case was in contract negotiating). He supported her greatly through her legal problems in 2011 when she was convicted for murder (un-rightfully), He even paid her bail at first.[36] Victor also paid for her mother Doris' expensive surgery in 1994 as the Collins couldn't afford it.[37] However, the dynamic between the father-daughter relationship that had been forged was overseen when Victor proposed marriage on Sharon[38] on New Year's Eve 2011, to which she initially declined but has considered it for her long term well being and that of her daughter, Faith. She enjoys a Hot and Cold (Mostly negative) relationship with his mother, Nikki Reed-Newman who has always questioned her (despite being a hooker and stripper at the beginning of her career herself), and at one point even bribed her to move away from the ranch, to which Sharon declined.[39] Nikki also (during the beginning) constantly urged Nick to drop Sharon as his girlfriend.[15] The two seemed to tolerate one another before and after Cassie's death, however even most recently Nikki has stood by her suggestion that Sharon is a gold-digger; insisting that Sharon has had relationships with the sons (Nick, Adam) and wants Victor as her "end game" for the ultimate "jackpot". Sharon and Victor have since gone through with the marriage, and Nikki walked in as soon as they were pronounced man and wife.[40] Sharon Case described the character's relationship with Victor as "She thinks of Victor, in a way like a father figure, but not quite. When she was younger she saw him as that, and then when she grew up she saw him less as a father and more like a hero."[41] Case stated that Sharon has grown up apart of the Newman family, and that Victor has always protected her.[41] She also added "Sharon loves to have that security blanket feeling that somebody's going to catch her - somebody out there is going to catch her if she ever falls - and that's Victor."[41]
[edit] Relationship with Adam Newman
In 2009, Sharon gave birth to her daughter, Faith Newman, however Adam Newman (Michael Muhney), Victor's younger son, stole the baby and gave it to Jack Abbott (Sharon's former husband)'s sister, Ashley due to him causing her to lose her initial baby (she suffered a hysterical pregnancy). Adam bonded with Sharon out of guilt; however they fell in love and married. The truth was revealed however, since Sharon has been unable to resist the hook that draws her towards Adam. She continued to go back to him. By the end of 2010, the town was against Sharon and her relationship with criminal Adam.[42]
On Sharon actually forgiving the man who stole her baby from her straight after the birth (and continuing to have feelings for him) Case said "Well, I know that that’s really a tough pill to swallow. But there have been a lot of real-life situations where people who are in love forgive each other for a lot of different things. The only thing I can compare it to is that Nick is very much in love with Phyllis regardless of her flaws. And she’s blown people up and ran people over. Sharon hasn’t committed any crimes. So it looks like they’ve chosen people to fall in love with who weren’t so perfect!"[43] comparing it to Nick and Phyllis' relationship.
In 2011, following the storyline when Sharon broke out of jail,[44] and fled Genoa City after being sentenced to life in jail, when asked if she was still a "Shadam" fan, Case stated "Of course! The pairing took us all by surprise. And that is what I was referring to with this storyline because of the pace and the vitality that “Shadam” has."[28] The actress has previously voiced her supporting of the on-screen romance between the two.[28] Sharon had a relationship with a man named Sam Gibson while hiding away from Genoa City (even Adam believed her death). Once she returned, Adam felt betrayed and conned her into a jailhouse wedding in which he revealed his disgust and never wanting to be with her.[45] Sharon's relationship with Adam (as of late 2010 after his faults were revealed) has cost her important friendships, like that of her ex-husband, Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman), who suggests that Sharon trusts Adam, the man who kidnapped her baby and passed it off as his sister Ashley's for months, more than she trusts him (Jack).[29] The break-up of their friendship saddened Sharon (who had chosen Adam's freedom over anything in the 2010 Skye fake death story line); she left the Abbott Mansion in tears when Jack blasted her for this.[29]
It is clear that Victor loves his daughter-in-law (through two marriages) Sharon more than his own son Adam, whom he has disowned multiple times, but stands by Sharon despite flaws.[46] Her relationship with Adam has gained a notable following, but also a notable amount of negative feedback, of "Shick" (Sharon and Nick) fans who would rather Adam out of the picture and Sharon return to Nick, her true love. The portrayal of Sharon and Adam has also been perceived as "showing us the many shades of love. In this case, mostly dark."[47] It was announced by an issue of Soap Opera Digest that Adam and Sharon would make love the night before Sharon's restraining order against Adam (which Nick forced her to have) is active.[48] Despite this, Adam vowed to fight the order, and to not give Sharon up.[49] Jae' Jones from Yahoo! said that everything Sharon does always leads her back to him, Adam.[50]
[edit] Cameron Kirsten storyline
In 2003, while away from her family Sharon was on the verge of committing suicide.[51] While away, she had sex with Cameron Kirsten (Linden Ashby), who abused her afterwards, beating her to the pulp, causing her to stay away from Genoa City until her wounds were healed. On this particular storyline, Sharon Case said during an interview "Sharon's family life had fallen apart. She left town to commit suicide. I think she drank herself into a complete supor. That night, the whole thing happened with Cameron."[51] Months later, she returned home, but to her greatest horror Cameron had followed her; and was in Genoa City to do business with Nick.[52] Cameron wanted to continue his affair with Sharon (and continue to beat her), and lured her to a hotel room, telling her he would expose her cheating on Nick to everyone unless she would do as he pleased.[52] Sharon did so, however once she refused not to have sex with him, he attempted to beat her; however she threw a bottle at his head, "killing" him.[52] She believed she had killed him and dumped his body in an ally; however he woke up hours later to Sharon's former best friend, Grace, who helped him recover – Cameron vowed revenge on Sharon. Sharon had believed she was a murderer and didn't tell the police; Case said "Now she's in deeper and killing him made it worse. She didn't tell the police. She wanted to save her family - not destroy it. All of these mistakes she made were a result of her trying to do the right thing."[51]
Sharon told her ordeal to her mother in-law, Nikki, who had accepted her back into the family; Nikki assisted Sharon to the sewer where she believed Cameron's "body" was lying, and they did find a body there. Back in Genoa City, Detective Weber (Sherman Augustus) thinks that Sharon is responsible for the disappearance of Cameron, and at the same time Grace was pointing her finger at Sharon.[52] Sharon continued to be haunted by Cameron's "ghost" (which was really him in the flesh, wearing make-up to scare her).[52]
Later at lunch with Nikki at a restaurant on Mother's Day, Nikki and Sharon are shocked when they see Cameron, alive acting normal. Sharon confronts him, and he says that nothing happened between them. Nikki, Sharon and viewers would all question her mental state here, however it was true that everything happened.[53] Soon, all was revealed; Cameron was jailed and Sharon would return back to her normal life.
On whether her "killing" a man and not tell the police still made her the heroin and romantic lead, Case stated "She is. Your romantic lead shouldn't just be a simple romantic lead. Sharon was that for a long time. She was in this love story with Nick and nothing really happened to her. You can only carry that so far. You have to have people doing bad things (or) what type of story are you going to have?"[51]
[edit] Murder charges and fake death
In 2011, Sharon was charged for the murder of Skye Newman,[54] Adam's ex wife; to avoid spending a life time in jail, she fled the state and traveled to New Mexico, where she remained for months until being found, arrested once again but later freed. During her time away, Genoa City was led to believe that she had perished in a car accident,[55] leaving her family and loved ones devastated. She called herself "Sheri Coleman" while on the run.[56] Once she returned; the character's sanity was questioned as she spent time away from her children.
"Will Nick and Adam be able to forgive Sharon for allowing them to believe she was dead? Probably not. What about poor Noah? He probably will return to the city now, unable to forgive his mom. Sharon has done some really unforgivable things this time, but this just may prove to be the most devious of all. Some will say she did what she thought she had to do. Even though it seemed as if it was easy, it's never that easy to walk away from the people you love"
That same year, head writer Maria Arena Bell dedicated the 4th of July episode to Sharon,[57] to "remind viewers of what the character's been through". On the event, Case said "I'm trying to show why Sharon's in the place that she's in," and also touched on the fact that all of Sharon's moves (controversial moves and the effects of other's actions) will be heavily examined,[57] like her character's recent story lines which involved taking up with the man who kidnapped her baby, going on the run after being convicted of murder and letting her loved ones think that she's dead.[57] The storyline which Sharon left her family thinking she was dead was criticized by most, seen as selfish.[50]
In 2009, Case that her dream storyline was always to have a “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” storyline[28] (while in a relationship with Brad Carlton), and In 2011 after her character went on the run, she said "I have always wanted to do this “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” storyline. When Sharon broke out of jail and became a fugitive, I went, “This is it! This is my chance!"[10] Case also stated that she had a good time with the storyline ––" I had so much fun because I liked that she was getting more aggressive and then she attacked this prison guard and jumped out of a window and took off in a car."[58] This storyline also (despite maintaining Sharon's physical freedom from Jail) saw Genoa City more against Adam then ever before—Sharon's own mother, Doris, Jack, Victor and others made it their personal effort to blame Adam for Sharon's believed death.[59] Case stated that she thought the storyline in which Sharon would go on the run and become a fugitive would have a different outcome, but thought the storyline turned out "really beautiful" through her relationship with Sam, Piper and the animals in the barn she hid away in.[58] "Through all this recklessness, I kind of imagined that the recklessness would continue while she was a fugitive".[58] Case also said that she believed Sharon and Adam would eventually meet up while on the run and create a "Bonnie and Clyde" storyline.[58]
[edit] Storylines
[edit] Backstory
Sharon was born on September 17, 1975 (revised to 1971)[note 1] and she grew up in Madison, Wisconsin with her mother, Doris (Karen Hensel) who raises Sharon on her own after being abandoned by Sharon's dad. Doris is confined to a wheelchair after she is injured chasing after a rebellious teenage Sharon; the rest of Sharon's life at home would eventually become Doris's full time career. Sharon's best friend was Grace Turner (played by Josie Davis at first). She was pregnant by her boyfriend, Frank Barritt. She gave birth to a baby girl and gave it up for adoption to Alice Johnson (Tamara Clatterbuck), with Frank wanting nothing to do with her.[8]
[edit] 1994–2003
In 1994, Sharon arrives in Genoa City and begins attending the local high school. Prior to moving to town she dated bad boy, Matt Clark, (Eddie Cibrian). She meets Nicholas Newman, who was dating Sharon's good friend from school, Amy Wilson (Robin Scott, later Julianne Morris), they instantly connected and later began to date. Later, Matt comes to Genoa City from Madison, determined to win Sharon back. Nick ends up winning Sharon's heart from Matt. Matt stalked Nick and Sharon, and he got into a fight with Nick, allowing Nick to be bruised. Overcome with anger and animosity, Matt chooses to get even with Sharon, trapping her in his car and raping her; Sharon hides this event. When Nick and Sharon are crowned the queen and king of their high school dance, rather than Matt and Amy, Matt takes revenge. He finds out that Sharon had given birth, and used this information to draw Nick away from Sharon in disgust. Nick and Sharon engaged, and he believed she was a virgin. He later learned the truth, and the two drifted apart but were eventually reunited. During these events, Nick's mother Nikki strongly objected to Sharon, calling her a gold-digger.
Nick and Sharon engaged again, and Sharon shared the truth about her Rape. Later, Matt was found shot in a pool of blood. Nick was suspected to be the culprit, and Matt told the police Nick shot him. Nick's trial began and he was jailed (shortly before, they eloped however the marriage was invalid). It was later revealed Amy was the person who shot Matt after he raped her, as she had suffered from emotional trauma when Victor tracked her down. Matt fled town, Nick was cleared and Nick and Sharon had a proper wedding. Sharon and Nick had their first child (who nearly didn't make it), Noah Newman. Later, Sharon's best friend Grace arrived in town, and helped Sharon track town her long lost child, Cassie (Camryn Grimes). Grace had previously told everyone that the child was her relative and attempted to keep her; however Sharon learned the truth. They (Nick and Sharon) managed to gain custody of her and become a family. Later, Nick sleeps with Grace (now played by Jennifer Gareis) twice (one time being an accident). Despite hardship, they get through this. Matt returns under the aliases of Carter Mills (now played by Rick Hearst). He plays with Sharon and tries to rape her, and succeeds. Eventually the truth of his identity comes out and he ends up dead driving off a cliff.
Sharon ends up pregnant, and it is unknown if it was conceived over Matt raping her, or if it was Nick's child. During an argument with Nick, Nick drives off and Sharon trips and falls. She gives birth to a stillborn baby girl, and the paternity of the dead child was in fact Nick. Sharon finds solace in Diego Guittierez (Diego Serrano, later played by Greg Vaughan) who was dating Victoria Newman (Nick's sister) at the time. They had sex after Sharon mis-interrupted a situation and assumed Nick had slept with Grace a third time. Sharon admitted this to Nick, who was initially angry but later accepted this and gave their marriage a chance. Nick caught Sharon kissing his father Victor. Once the kiss with Victor (which was nothing romantic) surfaced, Sharon left Genoa City, leaving her kids behind ashamed of herself.
[edit] 2003—
Months later, Sharon returned to Genoa City. While she was away, she had an affair with Cameron Kirsten (Linden Ashby) who abused her; she stayed away to recover from her wounds. Cameron came to Genoa City, and Sharon "killed" him throwing a bottle at his head. He later showed up alive, and the dead body was that of Sharon's ex (and Cassie's father) Frank Berrit. Cameron was eventually tracked down and jailed. Sharon's daughter Cassie was killed in a car accident, remaining in hospital for days before she died. Daniel Romalotti (Michael Graziadei) was briefly believed to be driving, however Cassie was driving underage. Nick found it hard to cope and pushed his family away, leading to an adulterous affair with Daniel's mother, Phyllis Summers (Michelle Stafford); Once Phyllis ends up pregnant Nick and Sharon divorce. Around the same time, Sharon had an affair with Brad Carlton, married to Victoria at the time. Sharon was briefly kidnapped by Nazis who believed she was Victoria, nearly killed by them. Sharon later married the Newman's rival, Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman). Her archival, Phyllis, finds out about Sharon and Brad's affair, and blackmails Sharon with this information. This leads to a fight near a cliff, Sharon and her best friend Drucilla Winters (Victoria Rowell) fell off the cliff; Sharon was found dead but was revived, and Drucilla was never found. Months later by the time Nick and Sharon were friends, The Newman Jet went down and Sharon and Nick were presumed dead, as they were both scheduled to travel together. Sharon came home alive, having not taken the flight, while Nick was presumed dead; until he returned months later. Nick thought he was still married to Sharon while he had amnesia, and he even shared a kiss with Sharon but returned to Phyllis. Nick, Phyllis, Jack and Sharon developed a company called Restless Style together, a magazine. The Company caused clashes and didn't work out; Jack and Sharon left. In October of that year, Nick and Sharon met in Paris and kissed, which Phyllis witnessed. Jack and Sharon filed for divorce due to Jack's lying.
Sharon and Nick made love at the Abbott Cabin after Nick found a letter Sharon wrote to him, she later experienced Kleptomania. She had a an affair with Billy Abbott (Billy Miller), and had sex with Nick again, resulting in a pregnancy. Nick and Sharon reunited, naming their unborn daughter Faith; Nick returned to Phyllis after Sharon lied to him (telling him Jack was the father) and Summer was poisoned. Sharon goes to a psychiatric ward, and tells Nick he is the father. Ashley Abbott (Eileen Davidson), Jack's sister was in the same ward, having a hysterical pregnancy (This was triggered by Adam who gas-lighted her). Sharon gave birth, and Adam stole her baby Faith and presented it to Ashley as her own, she believed her baby died. Sharon became close to Adam, and they married; however she later learned the truth and left him. Adam fled the country and during the course of 2010 and was briefly believed to be dead (he faked his own death), but returned shortly after. Sharon shot Adam while she was at the Abbott Cabin, thinking he was an intruder trying to break in. Nick and Sharon re-connected, and were reunited by November, however she ended up sleeping with Adam, and Nick left her. Sharon and Adam were reunited, and she lost custody of Faith to Nick.
In late 2010, Adam is convicted for the "murder" of his ex wife, Skye Newman. Sharon traveled to Hawaii, and met up with the very much alive Skye on a Volcano Hike. They ended up fighting, and by accident, Skye fell into the Volcano and died. Adam was freed, however Sharon was wrongly convicted for her murder and after a trial, she escaped Genoa City and fled to Mexico City. There, she met Vet Sam Gibson (Sean Patrick Flanery), who took her in. While this was happening, everyone at Genoa City thought Sharon was dead after she was carjacked, and the female that stole her car (wore her ring and had her ID on her) had crashed and died. Sharon accepted this, and didn't contact anyone. She bonded with him, the animals and Piper, a young girl there. She had sex with Sam, however returned to Genoa City after being caught, and was convicted for Life. She shocked everyone by being alive. Eventually, the full truth came out that she was innocent, and she was freed with the help of attorney Avery Bailey Clark (Jessica Collins). Sharon had a restraining order drawn against Adam at Nick's order, and had sex with Adam a day before it was active. She later briefly married Victor – who did this to protect Nikki for the murder of Diane Jenkins (Maura West) – however her feelings for Adam remained unresolved; Victor had an annulment. Sharon supported Adam after he was attacked, causing him to go blind again.
When Sharon found out Adam was responsible for breaking Patty out of the psych ward years ago, she ended things with him. Nick comforted Sharon after the revealation.
[edit] Reception
Despite crimes and faults, the character is described as a central heroine on The Young and the Restless, who has endured many challenges to get to where she is today.[60] Case received Daytime Emmy Award nominations in 1996 and 1997 as Outstanding Younger Actress in a Drama Series.[61] Case was nominated for a Soap Opera Digest Award for "Favorite Hottie" at the 1998 Soap Opera Digest Awards.[62] In 1999, she was nominated (for the first time in this certain category) for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, and won the award.[61][63] In addition, She was nominated in 2000 and 2004 for the same award. In 2003 she received a Soap Opera Digest Award Nomination for "Outstanding Supporting Actress for The Young and the Restless". The Cassie's 2005 death story line (and Sharon and Nicholas coping as parents afterwards) earned the show a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series Writing Team. The death of Cassie Newman is rated Number 41 in the list of "The 100 Most Memorable Moments In Soap History", both recognitions by Soaps Hunks.[64] The Nick/Sharon/Phyllis love triangle, which occurred during 2006–2010, was also well received. The love triangle was popular and successful by critics who felt that it changed Nick and Sharon's romance after the death of their daughter, Cassie; Soap Opera Digest magazine deemed it "Best Love Triangle". A 2011 Daytime Emmy "Final Push" suggested that Case's performance needed more Emmy attention, along with others.[65]
