Sharon Newman (née Collins; formerly Abbott) is a fictional character in the CBS soap opera, The Young and the Restless. Introduced in 1994, Sharon was played briefly by Monica Potter and then Heidi Mark before Sharon Case became the character's permanent portrayer in 1994. The actress won a Daytime Emmy for her portrayal of Sharon in 1999.[1] Case was absent from the show between February 17 and May 1, 2003 when she was in intense contract negotiations.[2]

Sharon is divorced from Jack Abbott. She has two children by her ex-husband Nicholas Newman with whom she briefly reunited in 2009: son Noah Christian Newman; and a newborn daughter intended to be named Faith Cassidy Newman. The newborn was taken at birth by her uncle, Adam Wilson, and presented to Ashley Abbott following a hysterical pregnancy under the ruse that the child was Ashley's. Sharon was told her baby was stillborn. Sharon has two other deceased children: a stillborn baby girl, and Cassidy "Cassie" Ann Newman.

Character's background

In 1996, Sharon Collins married her high school sweetheart Nicholas Newman. Sharon and Nick came from different backgrounds. Nicholas Newman, the son of billionaire Victor Newman (Eric Braeden), is from a very privileged background, and Sharon grew up without her father whom abandoned her and her mother both. Sharon grew up with modest means. During Sharon's early years of high school in Madison, Wisconsin, her mother Doris (Karen Hensel) was paralyzed by car accident during a dangerous snow storm trying to look for Sharon, who ran off in rebellion to be with her friends. Sharon's best friend was Grace Turner and Frank Barrittwas her boyfriend. Frank Baritt who was an older senior in high school pressured Sharon into having sex. Sharon ended up pregnant and told Frank about the baby, and he refused to be a part of raising it. At age 16, Sharon and her mother gave the baby up for adoption because they felt that they were unable to raise it properly. The baby was a girl and was eventually adopted by a woman named Alice Johnson, and she named the little girl Cassidy. Sharon moved to Genoa City at age eighteen, and worked two part-time jobs to earn ends meet, care for her mother, and pay for studies in school. At the time, Sharon dated Matt Clark, and she met Nicholas Newman. Nicholas fell for Sharon at first sight while he was dating Amy. Nick made it known to Sharon that he wanted to date her and that he would break up with Amy. Sharon broke up with Matt, but once she broke up with him, he raped her in his car, and Sharon sought therapy. While Sharon and Nick dated, her mother Doris experienced a great deal of pain and needed surgery. Sharon and her mother could not afford it, and Nick wanted to relieve the burden from them, so he asked his father to help them with medical expenses. Victor paid for the surgery. Sharon stopped by Newman Enterprises with sums of money insisting upon repaying the debt, even though Victor had told her that the debt was forgiven. Victor felt that Sharon was a genuinely good person, and wanted to help her mother in need, even though they were not financially able, and Sharon made a good impression on Victor. Before Sharon and Nicholas were set to wed, Sharon told Nick that Matt raped her, and Nick sought to shoot Matt. Nick did not shoot Matt, but once Nick entered Matt's home, Matt was mysteriously already shot and unconscious. Nick was arrested for attempted murder of Matt Clark, but was later relieved of charges because he was not the shooter. Throughout Nick's relationship with Sharon, Nick's mother Nikki Reed Newman Nikki Newman (Melody Thomas Scott), never took a liking to her son's love of Sharon; she always viewed Sharon as no good for her son or as a gold digger. Nick and Sharon attended Genoa City University together, but Sharon only finished two years of college before she became unexpectedly pregnant with Noah, and Nick finished with a Bachelor's in Business.

After Nick and Sharon's small wedding ceremony and Sharon's accidental pregnancy with Noah, Nick wanted the baby aborted, but Sharon refused to go through with it. Months later, Sharon fell through an ice pond, and was sent into early labor. The newborn Noah was expected to die. Grace Turner (Jennifer Gareis) Sharon's best friend wanted to help anyway she could, so Grace and her boyfriend Tony Viscardi tracked down Sharon's biological child Cassidy "Cassie" (that Sharon gave up for adoption as a teenager) secretively to find a way to ease Sharon's pain of possibly losing her son. Grace and Tony persuaded the adoptive Grandmother Millie to let them take Cassie under their care to be reunited with her biological mother Sharon (at the time, Cassie was 5 years old). Newborn baby Noah Newman recovered, and Grace secretively kept Cassie until she felt it was the right time to tell Sharon about her daughter that Sharon had long ago as a teenager gave up for adoption. Grace fell for the child and kept Cassie for a little over a year from Sharon.

One night, Nick went out partying with college friends and Sharon stayed home in bed sick. Her best friend Grace stayed with Sharon to help care for Noah in his baby nursery, while Sharon got over her being sick. Grace plotted to seduce Nick. Nick arrived home staggeringly drunk and went up to the nursery and made love to who he thought was Sharon, but was a willing Grace dressed in Sharon's lingerie in the nursery pretending to be Sharon. In the morning, Nick saw that Sharon was upstairs in their bedroom. Later Grace told Nick of their night together, and Nick panicked and asked her to not speak of it, because he wanted to remain married to Sharon. Nick also sought advice from his sister Victoria's husband, Cole Victor Howard, who advised Nick not to tell Sharon since he thought it was Sharon whom he made love to. When Cassie's true identity was made known, Nick had a hard time accepting her as Sharon's child, so Sharon moved out of the house with her two children, but the love between them reunited Nick and Sharon. Thereafter, Nick accepted Cassie as his own. Cassie then lived with Sharon, Nick and Noah.

Grace manipulated Nick with the secret to get a job at Newman Enterprises, in attempts to steal him away from Sharon. Sharon was planning on going on a business trip to surprise Nick, but their son Noah fell ill and so she had to stay behind to care for him. Grace went instead. Nick, angry with Sharon not showing up to be with him, allowed Grace to seduce him. The next morning, Sharon showed up to surprise Nick and she approached the hotel door and overheard of Nick and Grace's night together. Sharon ran from the hotel and was unexpectedly hit by a car, and went to the hospital to get treated for her injuries. Sharon went back to Genoa City and moved out of the house with her two children, not forgiving Nick for his infidelity.

During that time, Cassie's adoptive mother Alice showed up unexpectedly, and hired Michael Baldwin to win back her guardianship of Cassie "her daughter". Christine Blair (Lauralee Bell) was the attorney for Nick and Sharon, Cassie; Blair assisted in processing the adoption, Alice gave up parental rights to Cassie, and Sharon was awarded custody and, after a long wait, Cassie legally became a "Newman" (Cassie Newman), when Nick adopted her. Sharon eventually forgave Nick, especially for his help in the winning custody of Cassie, and the love between Nick and Sharon reunited them.

Nick and Sharon co-owned Crimson Lights Coffee House (where Nick proposed to Sharon as a teen), to stop the business from being shut down and also so they could have a business venture where they could work together. Down the road, they opened another one in Milwaukee, and made plans for a third coffee house.

In 2000, Matt Clark (Sharon's old high school boyfriend) came back to Genoa City, disguised as "Carter Mills" and also disguised physically after having gone through plastic surgery, and took a job at Crimson Lights. Matt wanted Sharon to himself, so he formed an alliance with Larry "Wartman" Warton (an ex felon, who knew Nick) and franchised date rape drugs through Crimson Lights secretively as a trusted employee. Carter wanted to set up Nick to get closer to Sharon. Carter was invited over for dinner at their home, and Carter managed to set up Nick to arrive home later than the scheduled dinner. While Carter waited for Nick to arrive, he continued to put date rape powder in Sharon's Margarita. Nick arrived home as Carter was about to rape Sharon, who was semi-conscious. Nick sent Carter home, and Sharon rested in bed. Weeks later Tricia McNeal caught Carter attempting to rape Sharon in a wooded cabin where he had set her up and lured her there to seduce her. However her father-in-law Victor Newman arrived, beat up Carter and sent him running away. Tricia and Carter took off in a hurry by car, and Tricia drove off a cliff injuring the both of them. Tricia survived. However in a heated moment, Carter in his own dying words told Nick that he raped Sharon during "Margarita Night" and pulled out his breathing tube committing suicide and making Nick look like a murderer. Nick was eventually relieved of any charges.

Nick finally got out of jail, and without Matt as a threat, romanced Sharon to get back to their lives. Months later, Sharon discovers she is pregnant. Both of them knew that Matt could have told someone about the rape, and that Nick or Matt could be the father to her child. Nick demanded to get a paternity test, but Sharon felt that it would be a high risk danger to the baby, and she was trusting that the baby was Nick's no matter the outcome. During their fight, Nick left home in a storm, knocking a chair over in front of the door, and drove off creating a loud noise from the tires moving at a high speed. Fearful for Nick, Sharon ran and fell over the chair and landed on her stomach, causing a miscarriage. In 2001, the baby girl was delivered premature and later died. They later found that the baby was Nick's daughter.

In 2002, a man named Diego Guittierez (Diego Serrano/Greg Vaughan) was always there for Sharon as a friend. Later, Diego began working at Crimson Lights. Legally separated from, she planned for her marriage to be over; however Sharon thought she should give her marriage another chance, but then she caught Nick kissing a woman named Carrie in the Crimson Lights backroom office. Sharon confronted the two and left. Later, Sharon found a note that was left behind by Grace Turner in Nick's office with her name and contact numbers; this in turn led Sharon to have a one night stand with Diego. Sharon later was summoned by Nick's butler as part of a plan: Nick wanted to make up with Sharon on a second honeymoon trip to a private island, and reconcile. Later, Sharon admitted her infidelity to Nick. Nick took it badly and beat up Diego, Sharon and Nick separated again, Nick called Grace Turner and they had sex. After weeks of being separated, Sharon sought marital advice from Victor and kissed him out of gratitude. Nick wanted to make up with Sharon, but saw them kiss. In mid 2003, Sharon left Genoa City for a few months to escape the problems in their marriage and what things had become.

In late 2003, Sharon came back home and was not easily forgiven by her family for leaving as she did. Later down the road, Sharon and Nick reconciled. Sharon made things right for her children to make up the months she was gone. A man named Cameron Kirsten, a software entrepreneur came to Genoa City, and was making a deal with Newman Enterprises, and Nick was handling the deal. Down the road it was unveiled that Sharon had a drunken one night stand with Cameron Kirsten, and after the seduction he beat her badly. Sharon did not want to shine light on the incident, and did not call the police. While in town, Kirsten taunted her about their one night stand and threatened to have the secret revealed to her husband to destroy her marriage. On New Year's Eve he told her to meet him in a small hotel for another round of seduction or else. Sharon went to the hotel room and he attempted to rape her; she clobbered him over the head with a wine bottle out of self-defense, knocking him unconscious and dragged the body behind a dumpster. Later, the situation was concluded by the discovery that it was all a set up that involved Cameron Kirsten and his girlfriend Grace Turner (Sharon's ex best friend) to get a cover up for Cameron's murder of Frank Baritt. Cameron was charged and jailed for his crimes.

In 2005, Sharon and Nick's daughter, Cassie, at age 16, died as the result of a car accident. Cassie did not know how to drive and Daniel Romaloti was drunk and could not drive himself, but Cassie offered because she had a crush on Daniel. She got them into an accident, and both flew feet out of the car. Cassie died in the hospital before her parents eyes, and this traumatic loss caused a huge strain on Nick and Sharon's marriage. Nick was very angry over the loss of their daughter and both Nick and Sharon did not know how to grieve together after the traumatic ordeal. Nick was very dark and not himself, and wanted to kill Daniel and held him responsible for Cassie's death. Daniel was on the run with at-the-time girlfriend Lily Winters to escape Nick's wrath. Daniel was caught and arrested. Later, he was released after Nick and Sharon handed over evidence to exonerate him from charges. A few months afterwards, still unable to handle the grief of their daughter's death, in late December 2005 Nick had an affair with Phyllis Abbott (Michelle Stafford) who happened to be Daniel Romaloti's mother. Sharon and Brad Carlton (Don Diamont)were on a business trip in NY and grew very close, and yet Sharon rebuffed Brad's advances. Brad was set to marry Victoria and before his wedding he declared his love for Sharon, and she dismissed him. Brad ended up marrying Nick's sister Victoria (Amelia Heinle). Sharon later found out about Nick and Phyllis's affair, and confronted him on it, and asked for a divorce and legally separated from Nick. She went on a business trip for Newman Enterprises in NY and Brad showed up because he still loved her, and they had a one night stand. Sharon received flowers that were sent to her hotel room by Nick. Sharon returned home and wanted to make the divorce official, yet Nick wanted to stay married to her. Sharon did not immediately accept him back; however, they tried to rebuild their trust, and she forgave him. Later, the two of them found out that Phyllis was pregnant, and Sharon asked Nick for a divorce. Nick and Sharon's divorce was final in late September 2006. On October 24, 2006, Nick and Phyllis eloped in Los Alamos.[disambiguation needed]

Nick and Phyllis married in late October 2006, and their daughter, Summer Ann Newman, was born weeks later. Due to the fallout of Sharon's one night stand with Brad Carlton, Sharon was fired from Newman Enterprises by Victoria when she discovered the truth. In late 2006, Sharon began dating Jack Abbott, and the two became engaged.

Late 2006, Sharon was kidnapped by gangsters who were in connection with Brad Carlton, and Nick and Jack helped save her. On April 5, 2007, during an NVP photo shoot, Sharon told Drucilla Winters that Phyllis had tried to blackmail her over her one night stand with Brad Carlton and during an argument between Sharon, Phyllis, and Dru (Victoria Rowell), Phyllis threatened to call Jack Abbott (whom Sharon was dating at the time) and let him know of Brad & Sharon's one night stand. Sharon & Dru attempted to stop Phyllis from dialing the cell phone and they grabbed a hold of her hand, but Phyllis abruptly let go, and Sharon and Dru both fell off a cliff. While Dru was presumed dead, Sharon survived. At the hospital Jack came to see that she made it okay, and Nick came to comfort her as well, and brought their son Noah to see his mother. Weeks later, Sharon and Jack were secretly married on April 23, 2007 in Sharon's home centered in her living room with her son Noah attending the ceremony. Nick got in a plane crash and lost two years of his memory, and believed he was still married to Sharon and that Cassie was alive. Nick, remembering only his love for Sharon, wanted to win her back even though Sharon was married to Jack. Nick planned a bank vault photo shoot and Nick and Sharon were locked in and talked and reminisced about their past. Nick kissed Sharon. Later, both Nick and Sharon returned to Newman Enterprises, and Nick wanted to be with Sharon and love her as when they were married and still together. Sharon pushed Nick away and told him to support his wife Phyllis through her trial in court for blackmail. Nick regained his memory, and remembered Phyllis and their daughter. Nick's kiss was revealed, causing problems in Nick and Phyllis's marriage, and Phyllis excused the kiss. During Sharon and Jack's marriage, Jack lied to her about numerous illegal scandals that involved corporate take overs and illegal activities, including Jabot, Newman Enterprises and the Victor Diary scandal. In 2007, Clear Springs building collapsed and Nick, Sharon and Jack were trapped in the rubble of the disaster. In December 2007, Sharon tells Jack that she is leaving him and moving out of the Abbott Mansion with Noah because Jack's recent lies had surfaced. Sharon forgave Jack and the two later reconciled. During her marriage to Jack, Brad Carlton still had romantic interest in her. Brad often insisted many times that he and Sharon were meant to be, and that she should not be with Jack. In 2008, Sharon and Jack's marriage became rocky due to Jack's constant lying. Sharon confronts Jack about this and all of the empty promises he made to her about not lying in their marriage. She then tells him that she thinks their marriage is worth fighting for, and that she will not leave him, as she accepts who he is. In June 2008, while on Nick and Sharon's son Noah's school trip in Paris, Nick and Sharon reconnect in Paris by reminiscing about their past, and Nick kissed Sharon on the bridge passionately. Phyllis, coming to surprise Nick in Paris, saw them kissing, and leaves back to Genoa City. Sharon backs Nick off, and refuses to cheat on Jack. Phyllis excused the kiss after she revealed to Nick that she knew of it.

In late January 2009, Sharon and Jack had a heated argument and Sharon filed for divorce, after which she went to stay at the Abbott cabin, but received a visit from Brad Carlton (who was in agreement with Phyllis to seduce Sharon to keep Sharon and Nick away from each other). The plan didn't go over well as Sharon refused to start a relationship with Brad. In early February 2009, back in Genoa City, Nick learned Phyllis had set Sharon up via the incident with Brad. Worse news arrived when Noah was involved in an accident after falling through a frozen pond. After packing his things to move out of the Tack House and leave Phyllis for her deception, Nick headed up to the Abbott cabin to tell Sharon about Noah (who had been rescued by Brad). When Nick arrived, he found a letter Sharon wrote, admitting she still loves him. Sharon wanted to burn the letter he found, but Nick refused to allow her to burn it, and they made love. The next day, Sharon arrived at the hospital to check on Noah, since the snowstorm did not allow for any travel the day before. Jack informed her about Brad's death and how he sacrificed his life in saving Noah from drowning in the ice pond. Hearing the gravity of Brad's sacrifice for her son led to her breakdown, and she experienced kleptomania. Sharon and Nick call off their reconciliation and he stays with his wife. In mid February 2009, Sharon had an affair with Billy Abbott, and she continued to experienced kleptomania. In April 2009, Sharon and Nick make love once again in the Abbott cabin. In May 2009, Sharon believes she is pregnant. She took a pregnancy test and it came back positive. Nick left his wife Phyllis to start over with Sharon and raise the baby that might be his. On June 26, 2009 it was revealed that Nick Nicholas Newman is the father of Sharon's baby; however only Sharon knew the results and was set to tell Nick, until tragedy led his daughter Summer to be poisoned by Mary Jane Benson (revenging Summer's mother Phyllis for having an affair with Jack Abbott, whom Mary was romantically interested in). Summer was in the hospital in near critical condition by peanut allergy exposure.

On June 29, 2009, after seeing the crisis at hand for Nick and him dealing with his daughter's near death ordeal, Sharon goes to Jack and tells him that he (Jack) is the father to her baby and not Nick. A few days later, Sharon reveals to Jack during an argument that Nick is the father not him. Jack realized why Sharon lied about paternity, but did not forgive her, and they went their separate ways. Sharon grew very stressed and experienced kleptomania again. Sharon commits herself to a psychiatric ward to banish her breakdown disorder. Phyllis suspects that Nick is the father of Sharon's child and confronts Jack, who denies it for Phyllis' sake. Nick goes to visit Sharon at the psychiatric ward and overhears Sharon confess to her mom that the baby is Nick's and swears her to secrecy. She later became trapped in the ward due to a patient's escape. Sharon explains why she held paternity from him, to help him focus on his daughter's recovery and help his family in crisis, and not stray when they needed him. On September 29, 2009, Sharon goes into labor at the psych hospital. Nick's half-brother Adam Wilson kidnapped Sharon's baby, and threatened the doctor who delivered the newborn to tell Sharon it is a stillborn that died at birth of malformed issues. He then presents Sharon's baby to Ashley Abbott as her own, as he had previously caused her to miscarry her own child and had been blackmailing her doctor into convincing her the pregnancy was normal, leading her to hysterical pregnancy.

Down the road, Adam meets Sharon at the hospital where they have a friendly chat. He befriends her, and begins his manipulations. They began dating on October 31, 2009. The start of their friendship began to make Sharon's ex husband Nick jealous. On Halloween night, Nick, Phyllis and Summer came uninvited to Sharon's home so Summer could trick-or-treat, and Nick showed his jealousy of Sharon and Adam being friends. From the start of friendship, Adam was open about his history with Rafe (Adam's male attorney) which Adam claimed he had his signals crossed with him in confusion, and about how they had a random one time fling (Adam claims he is not homosexual, but straight). Adam was also open and told Sharon about the diary scandal he was in on with Jack Abbott. However, Adam has not been honest in telling her from the get-go that he is the major culprit of the kidnapping of Sharon & Nick's baby girl that they have grieved and believe is dead. Nick walks into Sharon's home unannounced and catches Sharon and Adam in a compromising position in her bedroom, and Nick leaves jealous and upset. Phyllis is furious, and confronted Jack on him telling her of Adam and Sharon being in a relationship, knowing how it is affecting her husband. Sharon and Adam grew close in their dating relationship and Nick and Phyllis's marriage flounders in the process. On December 23, 2009, before Christmas, Adam proposed to Sharon but she refused, saying that it's too early, then later changes her mind and they fly off to elope. Nick and Phyllis were told that Adam took the Newman jet to fly to Tahoe with Sharon. Nick goes to Jimmy's bar to try to forget, and Phyllis is worried he's chasing after Sharon. After Sharon and Adam elope and attempt to return to Genoa City, the jet hits turbulence and has to make an emergency landing, before it lands Adam reveals to her that "her baby is alive" by a note. Nick learns the jet hit a storm and smoke has been seen near a wildlife reserve. Sharon is rushed to the hospital with a mild concussion and forgets about the note later she reveals to Nick that she and Adam got married.

in January 2010 Daisy burnt down Sharon's home while her and Adam were out with Ashley Abbott for dinner, Eden and Noah were of course upstairs about to make love.. Eden has been blamed for the fire. Sharon and Adam have been staying at Ashley's house and Sharon has since re connected with her daughter Faith. Ashley Abbott and Sharon have also been connecting and realized that they had the same doctor and Adam was there the night she lost her baby.. Sharon gets mad at Adam for not telling her he was there the night she supposedly had a stillborn and questions him but he of course makes up a believable lie.
