Shelley Mathew Malil (born in Kerala, India, December 23, 1964) is an American actor. Malil immigrated to the United States in 1974 and has appeared in a number of television shows and films, including The 40-Year-Old Virgin.[1] On December 16, 2010, in San Diego County Superior Court, he was sentenced to life imprisonment in a California prison (with the possibility of parole) after being convicted of attempted premeditated murder and assault with a deadly weapon on his former girlfriend Kendra Beebe.[2][3]

Shelley began pursuing his dream of entertaining people on the high school stage, often earning awards in district competitions in Texas, where his family immigrated in 1974. As a child, he had dreams of becoming a comedic actor like Bob Hope, whom he first saw on a neighbor’s TV set, the only one in his fishing village in Kerala.[4]

Shelley first came to Hollywood in 1995, after a two-year stint at New York's American Academy of Dramatic Arts. He had supporting roles in The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Holes (2003), Collateral Damage, Getting There (2002), Boys From Madrid (2000), My Favorite Martian (1999), Columbus Day, and Just Can't Get Enough. Shelley also appeared the television shows Scrubs, Reba, NYPD Blue, The West Wing, and ER.[5]

He was selected as one of the "Top 10 Overlooked Performances of 2005" by the Associated Press for his performance in The 40-Year-Old Virgin. He is the recipient of a Clio Award (for the Budweiser beer commercials) and a Los Angeles Ovation Award as Best Featured Actor for his performance as Bottom in A Midsummer Night's Dream, and he was nominated for the Los Angeles Ovation Award for his performance in subUrbia.[6]

On August 11, 2008, Malil was arrested for attempted murder after he stabbed his ex-girlfriend, Kendra Beebe, 20 times the previous night in San Marcos, California.[7][8] Beebe, a mother of two, resides in Carlsbad, California. Malil, who lives in Sherman Oaks, a suburb of Los Angeles, was arrested at an Amtrak station as he got off a train in Oceanside, California and was charged with attempted murder, mayhem, and burglary. He was originally held at $2 million bail,[9] which was then increased to $10 million because he was deemed a flight risk.[10] The bail was later reduced to $3 million, as Malil was no longer considered a flight risk.[11] Malil was charged with attempted murder, including premeditation, causing great bodily injury, residential burglary, and using a deadly weapon.[12][13] On August 13, 2008 Malil pleaded not guilty to attempted murder charges.[14] He was convicted September 16, 2010 of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon, but was found not guilty of burglary.[15][16] On December 16, 2010, he was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after nine years.[17]

He is currently incarcerated at Ironwood State Penitentiary.
