Sheltering Arms Hospital was founded in 1889 in Richmond, Virginia. From its inception, Sheltering Arms has been committed to rendering medical services to all regardless of their ability to pay.[citation needed] The early mission of the Hospital, to "succor . . . the sick, suffering poor,"[citation needed] drew the affections, resources and energies of many concerned citizens, physicians, and nurses into the service of ailing, impoverished Virginians.[citation needed]

Sheltering Arms Physical Rehabilitation Hospital is one of the first inpatient rehabilitation hospitals of its kind in Central Virginia, currently serving from two in-patient locations. We[who?] also offer case management services to help you[who?] and your family address short- and long-term rehabilitation issues and access community-based resources. Sheltering Arms Physical Rehabilitation Hospital is fully accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).[citation needed]

In-patient facilities:

  • NORTH: As part of the Memorial Regional Medical Center complex in the northern portion of the metropolitan Richmond area in Hanover County, the facility features 40 private rooms, modern therapy treatment rooms, courtyards, cafeteria, gift shop and convenient access from Interstate 295, as well as I-95, I-64, and U.S. Route 360 east of Richmond.

In other parts of the United States, there have also been several other institutions known as Sheltering Arms Hospital.

  • In Minneapolis, Minnesota, the Sheltering Arms Foundation was founded in 1983 as the successor organization of the Sheltering Arms Orphanage, Hospital and School, which had served disadvantaged children for more than 100 years. [1]
