[edit] Jean-Claude Van Damme Match

Sherman Bergman fought Jean-Claude Van Damme on November 3, 1979 in Tampa, Florida at the 2nd WAKO World Championships. Van Damme fought under his birth name of Jean-Claude Van Varenberg. He met Bergman in a non-tournament match, fought under full-contact rules. Bergman knocked Van Damme down with a left hook seconds into their middleweight match. Van Damme recovered quickly and knocked Bergman out with an ax kick in 56 seconds of the first round.

"When I fought Van Damme in 1979, he was not an actor at the time. He was fighting under his birth name. Our fight only lasted about a minute, so I really can't say I got to know him well," said Bergman in a newspaper interview in 2009.

Following the loss to Van Damme, Bergman was defeated by England's Gary Daniels.[5] Daniels went on went on to win a version of the world 175pound championship, and also became an action-film actor.

[edit] Kickboxing career

In the November 1984 issue of Official Karate Magazine, staff writer Barry Harrell in his column, Southern Exposure, called Sherman Bergman "One of the best new prospects on his way to the top."[6]

Exactly a year later in the November 1985 issue of Official Karate Magazine, Bergman's one round knockout over Thailand's Morsak Muangsu was highlighted in Barry Harrell's column.[7]

The STAR System World Kickboxing Ratings for professional kickboxing, listed Bergman briefly as a designated contender (ranked from 11th to 20th in the world) in the World SuperWelterweight Rankings.

A series of injuries lead to Bergman being inactive for over three years.

In 1988, Bergman launched a comeback which included knockouts over Brazil's Alejandro DasCola,[8][9] and Bernardo Jua.[10]

However,a knockout defeat to Mario Wilfredos ended Bergman's hopes of securing a match with a top-10 opponent.

In 2009, Bergman's record was listed as 56-8 when he announced his retirement from kickboxing.

[edit] Comeback

In March 2010, Bergman launched a comeback as a cruiserweight. He fought a draw with Russia's Igor Romanov (source:The Miami Herald, Sunday, March 28, 2010, page 27NE: SPORTS SCENE)[11]
