[edit] Lyrical meaning
The lyrics of this song talk about Carl Bell's ex-girlfriend who is suffering from a bad marriage that she can't get out of.[2]
[edit] Lyrical Structure
This song is known for having a couple of verses each followed by a short chorus for the first minute and 30 seconds, then leading into a series of six verses sung "It's too far away for me to hold, too far away" with a short instrumental break coming in between the second and third of these "Too far away" verses. The last line in the song is then sung "Guess I'll let it go".
[edit] Music video
The music video has the band perfoming the song (mostly centred on singer Brett Scallions) and has short flashes to things like a mother and infant child and a dog.

[edit] Critical response
Billboard said that "the best thing about 'Shimmer' is that it doesn't wallow in angst melodrama or reek of kiddie-pop sugar," and called it "vibrant, aggressive rock' n'roll for adults."[3]
