[edit] Career
Shin was an athletics major at Yonsei University before starting a career in modeling and acting in 1989. His film debut came in director Im Kwon-taek's Son of a General series, set under the Japanese occupation in the 1920s. When director Kang Je-gyu was writing 'Gingko Bed', he had Shin in mind for the General Hwang-role even before starting to write the screenplay. He actually said he would not shoot the film if he couldn't get Shin to play that role. In recent years,Shin has turned more towards popular cinema, finding his greatest success in fantasy/sci-fi works such as The Gingko Bed, The Soul Guardians, and the Korean-Chinese coproduction Bichunmoo. In 2001 he starred in the third film by director Jang Jin Guns & Talks. He drew praise in this film for his acting, and the film went on to become hugely successful at the box-office.
In 2008,he released an autobiography titled "Confession". The first print sold out in two days and is currently in its third print in Korea. The book had also been released in China and Japan. The book contains a foreword by international superstar Jackie Chan as well as testimonies by other Korean celebrities, including Choi Ji-woo, Kim Won-hee and Nam Hee-seok.
