Shirgaon ("Shirgaav" in Marathi language) is a small village in the Walwa subdivision of the Sangli District, Maharastra state, India. According to the 2001 census, the population was 2,100. The village is surrounded by the Krishna River on three sides. During floods, the only way into the village is from the north. There is a high school up to the tenth standard[vague] in the village.
There is an ancient temple of Lord Shiva on the banks of the river. Every year there are Mahashivratri celebrations in the temple, attended by a large number of devotees.
Agriculture is one of the main sources of income, with the main cultivated crop being sugar cane, followed by peanuts and soya beans. Most of the land is irrigated.

Most of the residents of the village are Hindu artisans. In the village there are various peoples leave like cast including the surnames of Patil,Bhosale, Mane, Pawar, Shinde, Hawaldar, Chavan, Jadhav, Kanase, Madgule, Machale, Kapilkar, Yadav, and Nikam. The vegetarian Lingayat sect of Hindusim is represented in the village by the surname Ambi. The traditional business of the Ambis is to drive small boats ("hodi", or "naav" in Marathi) on the river.
Other castes in Shiragon include the Guravs (i.e. worshippers or pujaries), represented by the surnames Patil and Mahar, Harijan, with the surname Waghmare, and Koshti, with the surnames Kamble and Chougule. The latter included the freedom fighter Shri Bapuasheb Shankar Chougule.
[edit] Pragati Wachanalaya Shirgaon Library
The public library in Shirgaon is the Pragati Wachanalaya Shirgaon Library, started in 2002 by the Pragati Group Shirgaon, led by Anil Ambi. The library contains more about 3,000 books useful for children in their preparation of competitive examinations. This library celebrated its 7th anniversary on November 14, 2009. The chief speaker was Vijaysinh Bhosle from Kolhapur. Competitions for the students included a Rangoli competition, drawing, painting, handwriting, and essay writing. The prize distribution ceremony was presided over by Dhanajirao Patil Sdo Walwa and Sandesh Shirke Tahsildar Walwa as a guest.
The library has recently been given a computer to store the book inventory. In addition to children's study books, it holds Marathi daily newspapers such as Sakal, Pudhari, Lokmat, and Loksatta, and monthly magazines.
