[edit] Business model
The company has established both online and offline presences without taking the traditional approach of bricks and clicks model, where companies begin with a physical store and take the concept to the internet later. Instead, the company launched its web operations in 2003 and then opened the physical retail site later in 2006. [1]
Shop New Zealand was incorporated into All World Shops Pte ltd. in May 2010, based in Singapore, and operation in Auckland New Zealand. The parent company serves as the main body in licensing Shop New Zealand’s concept to overseas countries.
[edit] Electronic commerce
Shop New Zealand’s online inventory consists of over 6000 New Zealand madeproducts and New Zealand well knowned brand products for international retail sale. It also operates ten additional internet properties related to other locally produced items including thehealthstore.co.nz, sheepskinstore.co.nz, beautyshop.co.nz and honeyshop.co.nz.
The majority of Shop New Zealand’s business is conducted through electronic commerce, with approximately 60 per cent of non-English speaking customers coming from Asia and Europe. [2] To enter the overseas markets, the company employed a large multi-lingual workforce and developed in-house search engine optimization knowledge. This strategy particularly has established a rapid entry to the Korean market [3]. The company also runs its own loyalty program known as WebitCash where users can receive 5 per cent of purchases back and redeem the value for their next purchase. The company’s major markets include Japan, Korea, United States, Australia, China, Germany, France, and United Kingdom.
[edit] Overseas expansion
The business concept of Shop New Zealand was expanded to overseas countries including China, Malaysia, Australia and Hong Kong. This was carried out under Shop New Zealand’s parent company, All World Shops Pte.Ltd.
The first licensee store, Shop China, was launched on November 2008. On July 2009 two more licensees have signed the agreements with All World Shops and launched their web operations in Malaysia and Australia. Another licensee store named ‘Shop Hong Kong’ was launched on September 2009. These licensee stores run a similar model as Shop New Zealand, where they source and retail locally-made products to worldwide consumers.
