Sikkim Manipal University (SMU) is a co-educational public-private funded university located in Gangtok, Sikkim, India. It was established in 1995 and is the first government-private initiative in the region.


The university was established in 1995, in accordance with the Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Sciences Act, 1995 (Act No. 9 of 1995); with the aim of imparting exemplary educational opportunities and healthcare services in the State of Sikkim and country wide.


SMU provides courses in IT, Engineering, Management, Commerce, Hospitality, Journalism & Mass Communication, Biotech and Health Sciences. It has two constituent institutes: Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS) and Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT,. Apart from regular college-based programs, the university provides courses in distant education through Sikkim Manipal University Distance Education (SMUDE).[1][2] The Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Sciences, Gangtok is incorporated under the State Legislative Act (Act IX of 1995) of the Government of Sikkim. Sikkim Manipal University has a separate Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, with major subjects like BA (Hon), MA, B.Com (Hon) and M.Com are taught in Semester System. Subjects like Sociology, English, History, Economics, Political Science, and Commerce are in the courses therefore the inclusion of H.S.S has elevated the prestige of the University in the Himalayan Region.


SMU is recognized by University Grants Commission (UGC), Ministry of HRD. It is also a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and recognized by Distance Education Council(DEC).[3]

But SMU DDE has commenced admissions to all approved programs pursuant to the Order of the Hon'ble High Court of Sikkim (in WP No. 4 of 2013) dated 22.2.2013, by which the Hon'ble Court has permitted the University to continue acting in terms of earlier recognition, namely, recognition dated 15.10.2009 granted by DEC..
