Sin City: A Dame to Kill For is an upcoming crime thriller neo-noir film and sequel to the 2005 film Sin City. Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller are set to direct a script co-written by them and William Monahan and based on the second book in the Sin City series by Miller.[4] Sin City: A Dame to Kill For is scheduled to be released on October 4, 2013.[3]

Cast

Production

In 2005, after Sin City was released, Rodriguez announced plans for a follow-up film that would feature many of the same characters.[9] He planned for the film to be based on A Dame to Kill For.[10] Miller said the film would be a prequel and a sequel with interlinking stories both before and after the first film. Miller, who was writing the screenplay in 2006, had anticipated for production to begin later in the year.[11] However, Rodriguez has said that official casting would not start until the script is finalized and in studio's hands.[12] Production did not begin as anticipated and has not begun for several years. Frank Miller has confirmed that he and Robert Rodriguez have completed a script, but while at the 2007 Comic-Con, he blamed the Weinstein brothers for the delay.[13] Robert Rodriguez has also signed on to direct a remake of Barbarella,[14] leaving the fate of Sin City 2 in the air.

During the 2011 San Diego Comic-Con, Rodriguez stated that the script for Sin City 2 was nearing completion and that it was his hope that shooting could begin before the end of the year.[15] Rodriguez said that the Sin City 2 would comprise A Dame to Kill For, Just Another Saturday Night[16] and two original stories Sin City creator Frank Miller has written for the film, one new story reportedly titled "The Long, Bad Night".[15] In August 2011, Rodriguez stated that the script is almost completely finalized and that he has already received funding for the film, and that production will commence once the script is finalized.[17] In September 2011, it was revealed that William Monahan has been brought in to add the finishing touches to Miller's screenplay.[18] In March 2012, Rodriguez announced that production Sin City 2 would begin in mid-2012. He also mentioned that the cast would be "of the same caliber and eclecticism" as that of the previous film.[19]

On April 13, 2012, the film was confirmed, in addition to the new title, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. The film was expected to go into production in the summer of 2012,[20] but principal photography began near the end of October 2012.[21]

Casting

Angelina Jolie was said to be Rodríguez's first choice in the role of Ava, so much so that he was delaying production to correspond with her pregnancy, according to Rosario Dawson,[22] but a subsequent article stated there are three rumored frontrunners for the role of Ava Lord: Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek and Rose McGowan.[23] Miller himself confirmed that he and Rodriguez were interested in having Jolie as Ava, and that the director was discussing the possibility with her.[24] Later, it has been reported that Jolie has been replaced by Rachel Weisz as the front runner to play Ava in Sin City 2.[25]

On October 29, 2012, it was confirmed that Devon Aoki would not return to reprise her role as Miho due to her second pregnancy, and that Jamie Chung would take over the role in the second film.[26][27] The same day, it was also reported that although production has begun on the film, the roles of Ava Lord, new character Johnny,[28] Dwight pre-facial reconstruction (Clive Owen plays the role post-surgery), and replacements for Manute and Shellie (as both Michael Clarke Duncan and Brittany Murphy passed away before production began) have yet to be cast.[29] On December 5, it was announced that Dennis Haysbert would replace Duncan as Manute.[7]
