Sivakasi (Tamil: சிவகாசி) is a Tamil action-masala film directed by Perarasu, starring Vijay, Asin and Prakash Raj in lead roles. Nayantara perform in an item number. The film's music is composed by Srikanth Deva. The film released during Diwali 2005 and was declared a "blockbuster". And was declared one of the biggest hit of the year.[2].

It was later remade into Telugu as Vijayadasami in the year 2007 starring Kalyan Ram and Vedika in the lead roles. The Telugu version has been dubbed to Hindi and is called Ek Aur Jigarbaaz. This film was one of the biggest blockbusters in Vijay's career.

Sivakasi, alias Muthappa,(vijay) is a do-gooder in Chennai who works as a welder there. He enjoys life with his friends and forgets the past he left behind. He falls in love with Hema(asin) and her family accepts him as an honest and good man at heart. One day, he lashes out at his lover's brothers and Hema yells at him. Sivakasi gives her one slap and tells her that he was not the way he currently is. He tells her about his past.

Muthappa was a good boy who followed his parents orders. His elder brother, Udayappa,(prakash raj) who was a crook even as a child, tells him to get some fireworks for Diwali festival. Muthappa obeys and Udayappa lights the firework. A woman stands on top of the firecracker and is beginning to burn. She begs for life because of the pain she feels. His father interrogates his two sons. Udayappa tells Muthappa to not tell that it was him. Muthappa is left in awkward silence. Udayappa screams to the village that it was Muthappa. Their father thrashes Muthappa and disowns him. Muthappa is thrown out of the village and leaves for Chennai. Ashamed and no longer knowing who he is, Muthappa decides to make friends with locals in Chennai and gains their respect.

After hearing all this, Hema is shocked as she never knew Muthappa's horrific past. She tells him to go back home and then only she will marry him. Sivakasi leaves for his village and realizes how much has changed over the years. His brother has gained notoriety and is running in the election. Sivakasi fights with Udayappa without Udayappa realizing who Sivakasi really is. He soon uncovers Udayappa's true character and decides to fix him. Sivakasi, his mother, and sister all go against Udayappa in the upcoming election.After several defeats Udayappa angrily fights Sivakasi and chases him out. Sivakasi returns the next day and several days later, Udayappa is ruthlessly beaten up by the other running party and begs for someone to help him. Sivakasi goes to his rescue and kills all the goons except for the candidate and his assistant.He reveals who he is to the whole village. Udayappa begs for Sivakasi's forgiveness and they both embrace and reconcile. Hema comes and informs everybody that she and Sivakasi will marry. Udayappa and the rest of the village humorously beat Sivakasi and the marriage between Sivakasi and Hema takes place. Everyone is proud of Sivakasi and the village embrace him as their hero.

[edit] Critical Reception and Box Office

This film released during Diwali in 147 theaters in Tamil Nadu and 60 in Kerala. The film opened up to postive reviews.Vijay's and Prakash Raj's performance were much praised by critics. The movie had a successful 150 days run in screens of Tamil Nadu and was the second highest grossing film of 2005. It was declared a "Blockbuster" by trade pundits.Prakash Raj later won the Filmfare Award for Best Tamil Villain for his role. Vijay was nominated for a Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor for his role as the protagonist.The film declared as a blockbuster.
