Slingshot is a New Zealand owned telecommunications company. Founded in 2001[1], it is one of the major internet service providers in New Zealand. Slingshot is a subsidiary of CallPlus Services Ltd, the majority of which is owned by Annette Presley and her ex-husband Malcolm Dick, with ex-CEO Martin Wylie holding a ten percent stake and a few others making up the rest.[1]. Their services include 'Slingshot Tolls', which provides reduced toll rates, as well as dial-up, and ADSL internet access.

Along with other Internet Service Providers in New Zealand, Slingshot Director, Annette Presley, has been one of the leading figures in criticising Telecom.

[edit] Criticism

On August 15, 2008, Slingshot came under criticism from the public and the media about a problem with their internet cache. The cache, setup to solve a known problem with YouTube, caused private information of customers to be shared among other customers. The error caused users logging in to websites such as Gmail, Facebook, Bebo and TradeMe to be given access to the accounts of other Slingshot customers, using those websites at the same time, instead of their own.[2] Similar incidents occurred with Slingshot in September 2007 and May 2008.[3][4]
