Project. In 2010, they won the Japan Record Award for Best New Artist. In 2011, two more former Eggs were added, as well as three new girls.

[edit] History

[edit] 2009: Indies debut

On April 4, Tsunku announced on his blog that a new girl group consisting of Hello! Pro Egg members would be formed. He later revealed that the members would be Ayaka Wada, Yuuka Maeda and Kanon Fukuda, all formerly of Shugo Chara Egg!, as well as fellow Egg Saki Ogawa, and announced that Ayaka would be the leader. A month later, on May 7, 2009, he revealed the group's name to be "S/mileage"; the name is a portmanteau of the English words "smile", "mileage", and "age", and together the name means "the age of smiles".

S/mileage's first indies single, "Ama no Jaku", was released at the Hello! Pro Egg: Nakano Step! concert on June 7, 2009.

[edit] 2010: Major label debut

After releasing 3 indies singles, Tsunku announced at the Hello! Pro Egg concert Shinjin Kōen Yokohama Fire that they would become a full time group in spring 2010. It was later announced that their debut had been set for May 2010— however, only on Tsunku's condition that the girls must "collect" smiles from 10,000 people in a drive called the "Smile Campaign" (笑顔キャンペーン?, "Egao Campaign"). Fans were asked to send in photographs of themselves smiling, and when all 10,000 required pictures had been received they would be compiled into a big mosaic. If the girls did not collect all of the photos they would not be allowed to make a major debut by Tsunku.[1] They regularly posted videos to the official Up-Front Works YouTube channel, titled "The Road to S/mileage's Major Debut" (スマイレージ メジャーデビューへの道?). They made their official "mini-live" event debut in Nagoya on March 19, to encourage people to take part in the Smile Campaign, with their fourth indies single "Otona ni Narutte Muzukashii!!!", released March 14, their first release on the Up-Front Works label.[2] This final indies release peaked at the #1 spot on the Oricon weekly indies chart.[3] The group made appearances around the country to have their photos taken with fans, and taking part in handshake meetings, in order to meet the quota of photos. After the deadline on March 25, it was announced that the result of the campaign would be announced during the joint S/mileage and Erina Mano concert on April 3.[4] It was then announced that the group would be graduating from Hello! Pro Eggs.[5]

S/mileage appeared as the opening support act at fellow Hello! Project unit C-ute's concert C-ute Concert Tour 2010 Spring: Shocking Live on March 20.[6] On April 3, they performed a joint concert with Erina Mano, at which Tsunku announced that the girls would indeed make their major debut, and revealed the completed mosaic.[7][8] Their first major single, "Yume Miru Fifteen", was released on May 26 and debuted on Oricon at #5. Their first tour, titled "Devil Smile Angel Smile", begun on October 9, 2010. In late August, a post on their official site revealed that their first album had been set for a winter release. The album's name was later revealed to be Warugaki 1 (Evil Brats 1) and was released on December 8.

On December 30, S/mileage received the Japan Record Award for Best New Artist, beating, among other nominees, Girls' Generation.[9]

[edit] 2011: Line-up changes

On May 29, 2011, S/mileage revealed at their 1st anniversary event that they would be holding auditions for new members to add to the 4-member group, and is only open to girls in junior high or high school.[10] At the same time, it was also announced that is a chance of demotion for the present members.[10] The second round of auditions was streamed live on Nico Nico Douga. Fifty-two girls are shown, eight of whom are members of Hello! Pro Egg. The third round was also streamed, and showed twelve girls, three of whom are Eggs. The new members were announced on August 14.[10] From Hello! Pro Egg, Akari Takeuchi and Rina Katsuta were added. Additionally, three new girls were added, Kana Nakanishi, Fuyuka Kosuga, and Meimi Tamura.[11][12][13]

On August 24, it was announced that on August 27 Saki Ogawa would be graduating from S/mileage and, subsequently, from Hello! Project. As the group's producer Tsunku revealed in his message on the official sites, in May of this year she asked to let her return to the life of a normal middle school student.[14][15][16] However, the rushed and weirdly-timed announcement being right after the reveal of the 2nd generation sub-members has caused the internet (both Japanese and International) to suspect the official reason and explode in speculation for the real reasons behind her graduation.[17]

On September 9, one of S/mileage's newest additions, Fuyuka Kosuga, was diagnosed with anemia. Only earlier having to miss a concert due to illness. Due to her anemia she has left the group and will resume her work as a Hello! Project Egg once she recovers.[18][19]

Starting September 18 a S/mileage sub-member Smile Campaign will be held, where each sub-member has to collect images with smiling fans in cities across the country in order to determine their place as an official member in the group. Photos can also be sent in by fans via Facebook, Twitter or mixi by following instructions. Tsunku will announce the results of the new member auditions at the "Tachiagirl" release event on October 16. On October 16 at S/mileage Tachiagaaru event the sub-members were announced to be full members.

On October 25, a week after the sub members were changed to full, it was announce that Maeda Yuuka will graduate from S/mileage and, subsequently, from Hello! Project on December 31. Her graduation is due to her wanting to retire from show business and focus on university entrance exams, and she feels that it would be unfair to her supporters when she can only give the fans half of her concentration on stage.[20] Her last single as a member will be "Please Mini Skirt Post Woman!". After her graduation this will bring the group to 6 members with 2 being first gen. [21][22][23][24]
