[edit] Background
Smuggler Films was founded by Smuggler production company partners Brian Carmody and Patrick Milling Smith. [1]
Patrick Milling Smith and Brian Carmody formed commercial production company Smuggler in 2002. It has been awarded ‘Production Company of the Year’ by several leading commercial industry magazines and award shows over the past few years, including 2010 by Creativity magazine.[2] It has also been awarded twice the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival.[3] Its branded content television shows for ABC and short independent films have variously won the coveted Cannes Lions Grand Prix and an Emmy.[4]
[edit] Films
Smuggler most recently wrapped production on the upcoming Greetings from Tim Buckley featuring ensemble cast Penn Badgley, Imogen Poots, Ben Rosenfield, Kate Nash, Norbert Leo Butz, and Frank Bello.[5] Projects in development include The White Tiger, an adaptation of Aravind Adiga's Booker Prize winning novel and the feature film adaptation of A. M. Homes' novel This Book Will Save Your Life by Smuggler director Ivan Zacharias.[6] Louis Mellis, who penned Sexy Beast, is set to write The Princess' Gangster based on the true story of Princess Margaret's affair with gangster John Bindon in the late 1960s.[7] It was recently announced that Oscar winning Danish director Susanne Bier will direct the American adaptation of Rapt. Bier will adapt the script with her longtime collaborator Anders Thomas Jensen. [8]
Smuggler has also acquired live stage and film rights to Jean Anouilh's 1960 play Becket and has enlisted William Monahan to write the film adaptation. The play centers on Thomas Becket, who was appointed by his friend Henry II of England as Archbishop of Canterbury in 1162 then ultimately sided with the church against the crown.[9]
[edit] Theater
Amongst its many theatre projects is the play Seminar starring Alan Rickman which premiered on Broadway in November, 2011. [10] Smuggler has adapted the film Once for the stage. Once was adapted by Enda Walsh and directed by John Tiffany. It premiered at the New York Theatre Workshop on December 6th, 2011 and is produced in association with Frederick Zollo and Barbara Broccoli.[11] After a successful run in previews, its producers announced that Once will play Broadway’s Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre in the spring of 2012. Previews will begin Tuesday, February 28, 2012 with opening night set for Sunday, March 18, 2012.[12] Smuggler has also acquired the stage rights to Hollywood legend Robert Evans' memoirs, The Kid Stays in the Picture and it’s sequel, The Fat Lady Sang, which will be published in conjunction with the debut of the play.[13]
