The 2000 team won the 48th District title beating Somerset in a romp, after winning in Double OT against North Laurel to get to the district title game. In Dave Schutlz first year he had a district title thanks to a groupd of great seniors. Led by Tingle, Maybriar, Merrick, Boon, Blair, Gregory and JR Super, they made a run nearly missing a trip to RUPP ARENA. During the 06-07 year, the boy's basketball team won the district title, defeating Monticello and Wayne County. In the regionals, the team defeated Somerset in the regional quarterfinals before falling in the semifinals to runner-up Boyle County for the second consecutive year.[4] During the 06-07 year the girl's basketball team advanced to the 12th region finals where they lost to Wayne County in overtime. During the 07-08 year the girl's basketball team won the schools first ever 48th District title in girls basketball by defeating Wayne County.

[edit] Soccer

The soccer program is perhaps the most decorated of all Warrior athletic programs. In 1998, the SWHS boy's soccer team won both District and Reginal Championships.

  • 2003 Season

In 2003, the boy's soccer team went as far as Kentucky State Final Four, after nearly losing District, Region, and Sub-Section Championships.

  • 2004 Season

In 2004, the boy's soccer team fired back with another mediocre soccer season, playing their way through both the District and Regional levels, but bowed out to the South Laurel Cardinals in the State Sweet Sixteen.

  • 2005 Season

During the 05-06 season, the boys (coached by Omar Prone) and the girls (coached by Matt Cook) teams brought home District titles.

  • 2006 Season The Warriors hired a new boys' soccer coach for the 06-07 season, former Somerset High School journeyman player James Ray. In their first season under Ray, the boys' soccer team finished with a decent season, going 11-6-3 on the season finishing as the 30th district runners up

Overall record 15-5-2, allowing a region low 24 goals and scoring a region high 76, and ending the season as the #19 team in the state.

[edit] Football

The Southwestern Warrior football program has long been regarded as a regional powerhouse, despite being in the same district (and therefore, region) as 5 time state champion Boyle County. The Warriors have reached the Class 4A state quarterfinals many times, and the 2006 season was the first time they made it to the regional final.

  • 2006 Season

During the 2006 season, the Warriors accomplished perhaps the best season in school history. The Warriors finished with a 9-4 record, including an undefeated 7-0 record in district play.[7] The Warriors handed Boyle County their earliest post season defeat in program history. However, Southwestern lost a heartbreaker to Louisville Central in the state quarterfinals, 47-40. Arguably the best and most noticeable SW team was the 1999 Team Led by MR Football Runner-Up Scott Blair, and Allstate WR/OLB DT Boon, and All State MLB Kenny Sibal. This team finished as the # 1 Scoring team in the state and ended the REG Season at 9-1 and # 2 in the state AAA Rankings. After running into a buzzsaw team in Bullit East the Warriors ended a season that many believe put SW on the map. Without a doubt these two teams are the most accomplished in school history, statistically and in the winning category.

[edit] Conservation and Raptor Club

The Conservation and Raptor Club at Southwestern High School has been going on for about 15 years. It is led by Mrs. Carter the Raptor Bio teacher. The Conservation club studies all kinds of environmental subjects such as wildlife, biodiversity, aquatics, etc. and competes yearly at regional, state, and national competitions with other schools. The Raptor club help heal injured birds from all over the state. Students in the club rehabilitate these birds back to health. Some of the birds are released back into the wild and others are kept all their lives for being trained to go into presentations. There are many types of birds that go into this club such as GHO or great horned owls, crows, screech owls, barred owls, barn owls, and red tail hawks and bald eagles. The facility that these birds are kept in are paid for by Mrs. Carter and other people and the school does not support this club. It is all paid for by donations from other people and students/parents/teachers.

[edit] Music Department

With the hiring of Dan Carpenter as head of the Music Department in 2002, all of the Southwestern Bands started growing and becoming true competitors.

[edit] Bands

During the 03-04 year the "Marching Band" simply worked on rhythm reading and creativity by playing on trash cans. In the 04-05 year the band put "Cirque du Soleil" on the field. During the 05-06 school year with the show "Jesus Christ Superstar," the Warrior Band qualified for KMEA State Quarterfinals for the first time in Southwestern history. In the 06-07, the band once again qualified for KMEA State Quarterfinals, but once again did not place in the top 8 to make Semifinals. In the 07-08 year the Warrior band put the "Rome" show on the field. In the 08-09 they put the show "Hieroglyphics" on the field. In the 09-10 the band put "Recess" on the field.

In the spring, the band plays 3 pieces at a Concert Festival at the Center for Rural Development, and receives a score of Novice, Apprentice, Proficient, or Distinguished (4-1). In the spring of 2005, the symphonic band made an Apprentice overall. In 2006 and 2007, playing grade 4 music (on a scale of 1-6), the band received Proficients. In 2008, playing grade 4 music, the band received straight Distinguisheds from all judges and went on to State Concert Festival in Louisville.

The Wind Ensemble is a new group that started in 2006. It is composed of 30-40 members of the Symphonic and Marching Bands, and normally plays grade 5 music. In Concert Festival 2006, the Wind Ensemble received an overall Proficient. In 2007, they received straight 1's (Distinguished) and qualified for State Festival in Louisville.

The Jazz Band is an extracurricular band for saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar and rhythm instrument players. The Jazz Band plays every year at the band's spring concert.
