Create account

Registering a free account takes only a few seconds, and has many benefits.

Simply choose a username (not the same as your email) and a unique password and click "create account".

  • For your own security, please choose a password which would be difficult to guess. (Help)
  • All usernames will begin with a capitalized letter, regardless of what you type.
  • All underscores will be converted to spaces, regardless of what you type.
  • The #, / and \ symbols cannot be used in a username for technical reasons.
  • You do not have to provide an email address, but if you forget your password you will not be able to get your account back without one.
(Your email address is never given to anyone with one exception: if you email other users, the recipient is given it so they can reply)

You should strongly consider choosing a username that is not connected to you. All edits to the encyclopedia are permanently recorded, and publicly visible in the history of any page you edit, as well as on discussion pages. If you use your real name, or a username that you go by elsewhere, people looking you up on the internet may see your username and others' comments on your editing. If your editing happens to cause concern, there may be discussion linked to your username.

To help protect against automated account creation, please enter the words that appear below in the box (more info)

Unable to see the image? An administrator can create an account for you.

  • E-mail (optional): Allows us to e-mail your password to you if you forget it. If you also "Enable e-mail from other users", then others can e-mail you from your User or User talk page by using the "E-mail this user" feature. Note that the sender's e-mail address will be visible to the recipient. If you change your e-mail address, you will need to reconfirm it.

Privacy

  • Your username will frequently appear publicly on the site; editors who use their real names have sometimes been subjected to harassment. See the pros and cons of using your real name.
  • Your IP address and e-mail address will be visible to a small number of users under tightly controlled circumstances related to control of vandalism and other disruption; see the site privacy policy for more.
  • Consider carefully if you wish to put personal information about yourself on Wikipedia (especially information that may enable someone to identify you). Generally there is no requirement to do this, although you are welcome to if you wish.

Your password:

For your own security, please choose a secure password. See Wikipedia:Security or our article on password strength for help in choosing a strong password.

(A typical "strong" password is at least 8 characters long, contains a mix of upper and lower case letters and numbers, and is not made up mostly of dictionary words and names.)

Your username must not:

  • be offensive or confusing
  • contain names of celebrities, notable world figures or events, or known Wikipedians
  • contain existing company, organization, or group names (including non-profit organizations)
  • contain words like "bot" or "script" that refer to automated editing processes
  • contain titles like "admin" or "sysop" that imply authority on Wikipedia
  • contain domain names or email addresses
For more information about which usernames are acceptable on Wikipedia, see our username policy.

In addition, if you already have an account with Wikipedia and simply wish to change your username, you can submit a request.
