The term Special Mission Unit (SMU), is sometimes used to describe designated Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) units. They are tasked with "special missions", sometimes referring to unconventional warfare, counter-terrorist activities, direct action, Special reconnaissance, and/or black operations.[1]
Media have used the term when describing five military units, although they are not officially acknowledged by the US government or US military:[2]
- United States Army
- United States Navy
- United States Air Force
Special Mission Unit can also be used to refer to other units with similar capabilities from other nations, for example the British SAS[citation needed], Australian SASR[7] and also Canadian JTF2.[citation needed]
