De St. Annastreet (Dutch: St. Annastraat) is a street in the Dutch city of Nijmegen. De name is derived from the hamlet St. Anna, named after a chapel devoted to Saint Anne (Dutch: Sint Anna)
De street functions as one of the major traffic arteries into Nijmegen and sets the stage for the arrival on the last day of the International Four Days Marches Nijmegen. For this occasion, the street is renamed Via Gladiola. The name is a play on the Dutch saying 'Death or the Gladioli', referring to Roman times when the gladiolus became a symbol of strength and victory. It now honours those who finish the marches.
The Gladiolus or 'sword' lilly is so named because its leaves have the shape of a sword. A Roman sword was called gladius, a smaller sword gladiolus. A Gladiator (Latin: gladiator, "swordsman") was a slave or professional fighter in ancient Rome. Gladiators fought other gladiators, wild animals and condemned criminals, sometimes to the death. Winners were often showered in gladioli.
