Star Academy Arab World, also known as Star Academy LBC, is a pan-Arab televised talent show, which began in 2003 that features a group of young male and female candidates from all over the Arab world.

The show became a huge success instantly and a must-watch event everyday for its fans. It is the Arabic adaptation of the French television show Star Academy, which is produced by Endemol. Star Academy Arab World is produced by Netherlands company Endemol, Vanilla Productions & PAC Ltd.. The show is based on the Spanish format called Operación Triunfo.

The show basically revolves over 16-20 contestants that go live in an isolated penthouse apartment for 4 months, with one of the contestants getting eliminated every week through a nomination process. The contestants get to showcase their talents in a weekly concert in which the contestants get to perform on stage with various designs, dancers, solo performances, acapella on piano and sharing the stage with the most popular singers in the Arab World.

One of the show's highlights are the appearances of some of the the Arab World's most important performers such as Haifa Wahbe, Elissa, Angham, Asalah, Ramy Ayach, Myriam Fares, Nawal Al-Zoghbi, Najwa Karam, Wael Kfoury, Sherine, Fares Karam, Abdallah Al Rowaished and many more. The show has also been for its reinvention and continuous changes, just as, as of its third season, the show witnessed guests from international superstars such as Julio Iglesias, Anggun, Karl Wolf, Tina Arena, Chris De Burgh and Massari.

Based in Adma north of Beirut, Lebanon, the show is aired for 4 months on the Lebanese TV station LBC. It is hosted by Hilda Khalife. The show concept consists of an academy and candidates / students, where it is also a talent competition to introduce a new artist among the candidates. Talents are not restricted to singing only, but for acting and dancing as well.

It is divided into two formats: each day a program presents moments of the everyday life and training of the candidates (what they are called), and a prime show every Friday evening, which is live. In addition an affiliate TV station films them 24/7.

The concept of the show is training the students in several disciplines: singing, acting, vocalizing, theatre expression, dancing, and musical culture. Then, each week (on Tuesdays) the three weakest students are nominated. The nomination is done by the teaching staff after the candidates undergo an evaluation test the day before (Monday). At the end of the week (Friday), a special live show called the "Prime" is broadcasted. During the prime show, the candidates perform and sing either by themselves or with guest artists. The 3 nominated candidates' initial voting is through the public; done by either phone calls and/or text messages. The one with the highest percentage of votes returns back. The remaining two candidates are then voted on by their fellow candidates, and the one with the most votes remains. The remaining candidate then leaves the academy. When the overall number of candidates is reduced, the nomination by the professors comes down to two students. By this point, it's completely up to the public to vote who is in and who gets out, as the remaining candidates do not vote.

The show proved to be immensely popular, at one time attracting nearly 80% of the Lebanese adolescent population, and became the actual most popular show in all Western Asia and worldwide as well, as the LBC station also provides satellite connections to all the Lebanese and Arab diaspora around the world. LBC, the network airing the show, reaped huge profits from the show (but have been unable to replicate the show's success with other reality based programming).

The show received intense criticism when it started off, which led some people to speculate that it would not succeed^{[citation needed]}.

This debate also caused the indefinite postponing of West Asian edition of Big Brother, otherwise known as Big Brother - Al Raiss.

Joseph Attieh, who is a radio and TV production student received a trophy, $50,000 in cash and a brand new 2006 car. He was 19 years old and the first Lebanese who won the Title.

It is the first time that a girl came in first, Shatha Hassoun was the first girl to take the title.
Her success was a juicy subject for worldwide press, and she was credited for uniting her country, Iraq, over a happy event despite war. \ This season was the first season that two girls claimed first and second place when Shatha Hassoun came in first and Marwa came in second respectively.

The fifth season of Star Academy began on 25 January, 2008. There were several new changes in the academy that included a new swimming pool, a basketball court, a trampoline, a billiard table, a table-tennis table and a newly decorated building. New lessons were added this season including swimming lessons, basketball lessons and music lessons.

The final prime of Star Academy 5, held on 23 May, 2008, witnessed the crowning of Nader Quirat, the first Tunisian winner. The voting for the two finalists began on 16 May immediately after the 17th prime. Nader Quirat is the first winner of the program to sing primarily in non-Arabic languages (English, French, Spanish, Italian etc.) but did sing in Arabic on various occasions. Nader is also the first winner to have been a nominee and was not saved by the public, as he had received a low percentage of votes. Nader is the first winner from the Maghreb region.

Star Academy 6 launched its first prime from Adma, Lebanon on Friday 20 February 2009 on LBC. The show was a long awaited spectacle of singing, music, dance, and the return of Lebanon's biggest show. Star Academy has undergone big changes like a larger stage and a larger number of contestants. The Academy itself has taken an extreme makeover and now includes, a theatre for movies, a spa, a DJ Studio, and a newer look. Twenty young men and women from all over the Arab World are now competing in the run to become the Star of Season 6.

[edit] Success of the Star Academy Alumni

Season 1:

Ahmad Al Sherief:the most successful graduate out of the season and perhaps all seasons, where he finished off 5th place, received a distribution for albums contract from Rotana, as his first album was a success all over the Arab world with the hits: Sahran Ma3ak El Laila (I'm partying with you tonight), Bain el nass (Between All People), as he also starred alongside, Haifa Wehbe, Carole Samaha, Ruwaida and Wael Kfoury in Bahr El Nojoum movie produced by PEPSI. Bashar al Shatti also received moderate success with his first 2 albums which were produced with Rotana, but eventually was released from his contract, due to what he proclaims lack of care and not living up to the agreements, he filmed 2 music videos only. Bashar also stars in a few independent television shows.

Baha'a Al Kaffy: released an album with the main song "Wa'adni" which received good amount of airplay, though the album wasn't as successful, Baha'a currently starts in Egyptian movies. Mohammad Attieh, the winner of season 1, did not have any success in as a recording artist, and thus turned to acting and has appeared in a few movies. Sophia Marikh: released an album entitled "Kelmet Hob" (Word of Love), receiving nominal success, with a few tracks ("Bahik Feek", "Kelmet Hob") receiving moderate amount of airplay.

Season 2:

ZeeZee Adel: The biggest selling graduate out of all seasons. Her first album debuted at number 1 on Rotana's Charts "Wahda Taiba", which included 3 hit singles; "Hob Mosh Mahsoub Alaya", "Wahda Tanya", "Aref Ana Gayah Laih", she released music videos, and has successful concerts all over the Arab World. She is currently signed to a 3 year contract with 3 music videos shot to each album and the freedom to release singles, making her the only Arab World Star Academy student to get such a contract. Zeezee won the Arab Radio and Television Network (ART) award for the best new artist. She is considered one of Rotana's main artists. Zeezee just released her second album "Wa3d Alaya" that was heavily promoted. It includes ten songs with Rotana, just before releasing her second album, with two successful singles one of which was a national song with a group called "Sinai".

Hisham AbdulRahman, the winner of season 2, did not pursue a singing career and instead has had a very successful acting and presenting career. He starred in the first ever Saudi movie "Kef al Hal," and also presented many popular shows airing during the month of Ramadan. He currently works with the channel Western Asia Broadcasting Center (MBC).

Amani Swissi: Amani's album performed well in the charts, peaking at number 2. Osama Al Rahbani, an important Arab musician said that Amani had the best voice to ever come from a singing competition. Amani has recently decided to quit Rotana with mutual understanding with the producing company and has decided to work on singles. Amani claims that Rotana was not giving her the follow up that she needed and production on her album and videos was slow. She had to wait a year-and-a-half before shooting Wain the hit single from her debut album with Rotana.

Salma Ghazali: Salma achieved unexpected success with her first single, "Bil Naes", which debuted on number 3 on the Rotana Music Charts.

Season 3:

Joseph Attieh, has been hugely successful and has produced 3 video clips. Joseph has also has an acting role in the Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation (LBC) show "Jeeran" along with many other contestants from the 3rd and fourth seasons of star academy. Fadi Andraos, Hana il Idrissi, and Hani Hussein have released a few moderately successful singles. Hani Hussein released a successful duet with Chris DeBurgh entitled "My Father's Eyes".^[1] Fadi Andraos has also has a role in his own show "Fadi w Radi."
