It is the 6th Sports channel launched by STAR INDIA in India after STAR Sports, STAR Cricket, STAR Cricket HD, ESPN & ESPN HD. The channel has been launched especially for the Indian sub-continent keeping in mind the growing need of Indian cricket fans and neglecting other sports fans especially football. STAR Sports 2 broadcasts only cricket. It is often criticized for repeating same cricket shows over and over again. [1] Since the ESPN Star Sports Network has acquired the broadcast rights of BCCI international and domestic matches and will repeatedly show highlights of it 24/7. [2] [3]

The channel is initially available on digital cable networks and DTH and will be subsequently rolled out on analog cable networks across the country.[4] For the launch of the channel, Star is running a campaign across the Star India network.[5] It is currently available on Sun Direct, Airtel Digital TV, Reliance Digital TV, Videocon D2H and Tata Sky. As well as multiple cable operators across India.
