The Stetson–Harrison method (or Harrison–Stetson method) is a humorous method for generating numbers; it refers to simply making numbers up, or "pulling them out of a hat".[1] In a twist, one sometimes sees references to research reports from the "Stetson–Harrison Institute".

A Stetson is a type of hat and Harrison a company that used to manufacture Stetsons. According to urban legend, Harrison was added to the method name to increase credibility.[2]
