Stomatology (stomato- + -ology) is the branch of medicine and dentistry relating to the mouth and mouth disease. It was practiced by physicians as a medical specialty in the early 20th century in the United States but these concerns are now largely handled by dentists.
The specialty is defined within Europe under Directive 2001/19/EC.
Stomatology is a branch of medicine which relates to the mouth. It thus overlaps substantially in concept with oral medicine. Stomatology includes basic knowledge on the teeth and focuses more on the mouth and related diseases. A stomatologist is a medical doctor, dental medical doctor or dentist, depending on the country's system of academic awards.
