Sukinda is a town in Jajpur district, Orissa, India.Orissa accounts for about 98% of the total proved chromite (chromium ore) reserves of the country, of which about 97% occur in the Sukinda Valley,In September, 2007, one Blacksmith institute of US has come out with a report giving a list of top 10 severely polluted places of the world. The list includes Sukinda. As expected, the report was given wide coverage in almost all the state and national level media, without most of them bothering to verify the veracity of the standards made in the report.Ospcb.[1][2] The Technical Advisory Board of Experts of the BI which have prepared the report, had never visited Sukinda Valley and heavily relied on the assessment of a survey conducted by the Orissa Voluntary Health Association (OVHA), carried out almost 12 years ago.
SGAT President B K Mohanty told newspersons that the BI report was based on 'incorrect fact and erroneous assumptions'. The Institute, he said, even stated clearly that it was not possible on their part to independently verify the fact.
It was most shocking that a reputed Institute like BI could draw conclusion by merely relying on the observations made by some organisations without verifying the fact scientifically, Mr Mohanty said.
The BI, he said, also referred to the study of the IBM and BRGM in 1998 which indicated concentration of hexavalent chromium in excess of the permissible limit in pit water, ground water and surface water, in Sukinda vally.
This was the situation before the installation of the Effluent Treatment Plant(ETP) in the mines, the Geoscientists said, adding that there has been no trace of the hexavalent chromium in the Brahmini river as reported by the BI.[3][4]

[edit] Geography
It is located at 20°58′0″N 85°55′0″E / 20.966667°N 85.916667°E at an elevation of 72 m above MSL.[5]
[edit] Location
National Highway 200 passes through Sukinda. Sukinda is flanked by the Mahagiri range and the Daitari range, Sukinda Valley spreads over an area of 50 sq km from Kansa to Maruabil in Jajpur District. In the middle of this valley flows a natural stream, Damsala, and it joins river Brahmani at a point further from the valley. The valley is abundant in the deposits of chromites and Orissa accounts for more than 90% of the country’s chromite deposits.
[edit] Natural Resources
Sukinda has an abundance of chromite deposits, which is around 97% of India's total deposits. .[6] Around 12 mines operate in the area without proper environmental controls. Pollution caused by the mines is a major health hazard.[7][8]
