- This article is about Sukkur, a point on the Indus, for alternate meanings, see Sukkur
Sukkur is the narrowest point on the lower Indus River, which is why it was the location chosen by the British for the construction in 1932 of the first Indus dam, the Lloyd Barrage. Seven canals were dug to distribute water to all parts of the province; this eventually led to Pakistan having the longest irrigation system in the world, with 61,000 km (38,000 mi) of irrigation canals.
