Summer Hill railway station is located in Summer Hill, a suburb in the inner-west of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. The station is located on the Main Suburban railway line and is served by Inner West line trains of the CityRail network. While there are six tracks through Summer Hill, only 3 tracks have platforms and only 2 of those 3 are currently in use. The line is accessed via a subway with lifts and stairs to the three platforms.

[edit] History

The railway station opened on 15 September 1879.[1] The line was quadruplicated in 1892[2] with platforms provided on all four tracks- two side platforms and an island platform. In 1927, the line was sextuplicated in association with electrification works, and the northernmost island platform (facing the Down Main) was removed to allow construction of the two additional tracks.[3] In 2004, Summer Hill was provided with Easy Access lift facilities which are accessed from the subway. Initial plans from the then State Rail Authority called for a new overhead footbridge to access the station however this was opposed by locals on both aesthetic and access grounds, and the plans were subsequently altered to the current arrangement.[4]

[edit] Platforms and services

The station is served by two to four trains per hour each way, with additional trains during weekday peak hours. During off-peak hours two of these four train services towards Regents Park terminate in Ashfield.
