The Southeastern Universities Research Association network. It provided networking services for a variety of universities and industries, and was the first TCP/IP network to sell commercial connections, making it arguably the first Internet Service Provider (ISP) when IBM Research in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina was connected in 1987-1988. SURAnet was the first and one of the largest Internet providers in the United States. It was acquired by BBN in 1994.
