Surya TV (Malayalam: സൂര്യ ടി.വി. sūrya ţi.vi.) is a Malayalam-language television channel in India. Established in 1998 on October 7, Surya TV is the first digital channel of India and is now broadcast in MPEG4 format. The channel is in second position (as per TAM ratings) among Malayalam channels. The channel is part of Sun TV Network and transmits entertainment and movie based programs. Surya TV was the second privately owned television channel in Malayalam and the third to broadcast in the language. Surya TV operates from two studios in Kerala: Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi.

Coverage, viewership and impact[edit]

Surya TV reaches the homes of Malayalees in over 27 countries worldwide including the Indian sub-continent, USA, Canada, Europe, Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

Programming and shows[edit]

Surya TV is a general entertainment channel with programmes in a wide variety of genres including Malayalam and Tamil-language movies, soaps, reality shows, talk shows, news programmes and music-based shows. While programming is mainly targeted at family audiences, there are several programmes aimed towards specific audiences such as shows for children, teenagers, young working professionals and elders.

The channel also broadcasts a successful musical talent reality contest - Surya Singer, sponsored by the confectionery company Cadbury Oreo.

The channel covers the South Indian International Movie Awards, also known as the SIIMA Awards, which reward the artistic and technical achievements of the South Indian film industry.
