Swallow Hill Community College is a new comprehensive school, built to replace the former West Leeds High School and Wortley High Schools. The school opened in September 2009 using two sites, the main site on the previous West Leeds High fields and the Wortley High buildings for the lower years.
[edit] History
Proposals for the merger have been discussed for many years, due to close proximity between the two schools. West Leeds opened in 1907 based at the Old School Lofts building on Whingate. The school became separate Girls and Boys school's, with girls based on Congress Mount until they final remerged into one new school on the expanded Congress Mount site.
In 2006 the new school was proposed and later accepted by Education Leeds and Department for Children, Schools and Families. Construction begun in 2008, on the fields opposite to West Leeds and was completed by August 2009 ready to be opened for the new school year.
The name Swallow Hill was chosen to reflect the local area of Swallow Hill (Wortley High was located on Swallow Crescent). Due to the new school being too small to house all students of the combined school, years 7 and 8 are located at the Wortley High site until intake rates fall and allow enough space for all students. There are 1,600 students on roll with a 1,200 capacity school building.
