Aarti ritual being conducted at the temple in Vadtal by an ascetic

Jay Sadguru Swami or the Swaminarayan Arti is the arti sung in all Swaminarayan mandirs. Arti is conducted by the singing of a special prayer and the playing of musical instruments. The piece was composed by Muktanand Swami on 5 November 1802.[1][2] During arti a lighted ghee lamp with wicks is waved before murtis, representations of Swaminarayan and other deities.[3] Swaminarayan is believed to be physically manifest in the murti, and several arti ceremonies are performed throughout the day, allowing devotees to show their devotion. As the murti is not permanently on view for devotees, the arti is an important opportunity to gain blessings through darshan of a physical manifestation of Swaminarayan. In shikharbaddha mandirs, aarti is performed five times a day according to Vaishnava tradition, while In dev mandirs or Hari mandirs, arti is performed in the morning and evening only.[4] The arti sung in BAPS Swaminarayan mandirs is based on an original manuscript of the composition by Muktanand Swami and differs from the verses sung in mandirs of the Laxmi Narayan Dev Gadi and Nar Narayan Dev Gadi by two words.[5]

Translation in English [edit]

Hail to Sahajanand Swami who is an eminent preceptor and who is omniscient. Sahajanand is gracious and compassionate. He has many names and great divine prowess. …1

I offer my humble respects at your lotus feet with folded hands, bowing at your feet; you have dissolved all my miseries. …2

You, Lord Narayana, who were born in a Brahmin family, have redeemed innumerable fallen and demonic souls. …3

You perform divine sport anew every day, and you are eternal. The sixty-eight holy pilgrimage places rest at your feet, and to serve you results in greater merit than to visit Kashi millions of times. …4

Those who have darshan of the manifest Lord will be freed from the clutches of time moving to death and rebirth, and they will be redeemed along with their whole families. …5

Now you are very gracious and the source of grace. You have shown us an easy path to emancipation. …6 [7]
