Presently there are about 100 families in Germany in the Syriac Orthodox Church of Germany, a self-governing part of Indian Orthodox Church.[when?]

Mar Severious Moosa Gurgan was ordained as the first Metropolitan of the Syriac Orthodox Church of Germany in 2008 by Dr. Thomas Mar Athanasius and Dr. Yuhanon Mar Milithios in Thrissur with the help of Dr. Thomas Mar Makarios. In extraordinary circumstances, the episcopal synod of the Malankara Orthodox Church approved the consecration later. Normally, ordinations have to be approved by the synod before consecration. The church and its bishop was later excommunicated by Catholicos of the East MarThoma Didymos I.[1][2]
