The prize money in 2013 was A$1,000,000.[1] There has been an increase in prize money for the race in 2014 to A$2,500,000 as part of the inaugural 'Championships' series.[2]

Race history[edit]

The inaugural race in 1997 was known as the Endeavour Stakes.[3] In 1999 the race was renamed in honour of the trainer Thomas John Smith (1916–1998) who won 33 Racing titles in Sydney.[1]

The race has risen in prestige due to the stakes offered. In recent years it has attracted high calibre sprinters such as Black Caviar[4] and Takeover Target who have gone on to win overseas.
