According to 'Environmental Science for Environmental Management' (Timothy O'Riordan, 2nd ed., Prentice Hall 2000), alfisols are named 'luvisols' in FAO.

Correct, although exceptions prevent alfisols being truly synonymous with luvisols. Some aridisols classify as luvisols. Some vertic alfisols classify as FAO vertisols, lithic alfisols classify as FAO lithisols, etc. Paleorthid 20:06, 12 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Wait... what?

The page on Alfisols lists them as both the oldest and the youngest forest soil order. WTF?
